noticed some interesting growth on my hammers skeleton. I expected it to be soft like a sponge but when I removed it from the tank I realized it’s calcified and sharp. Is this some type of branching corraline or something else?

Thanks! There’s a video as well.

Haven’t seen this one before but noticed it slowly growing over time and only on this skeleton
I want a scraping of that. I have seen it in the Carribean and on dried old Phillipines dead coral my grandfather collected.

It looks identical to Miniacina miniacea. Thanks for that ID!

@KrisReef would be happy to send you some scrapings if you want. Should be easy to ship.
Oh yeah, you are right up the road in Coast Mesa! I'm South a tad in Oceanside.

I had a bunch on one of my hammers too. Never seemed to bother it. Once I realized it wasn’t damaging anything I thought it’s another neat weird addition to appreciate
