Pink Milli Question

I have a Pink Milli that is turning white at the bottom is it ok? I have it about 8 inches under a 250 watt mh light. It has a high flow of water, I do a weekly 10% water change so I wouldn't think any of the water levels would be off. Please let me know thanks.

sps turning white at the base usually isn't a good thing. Can you get a better picture?

also, don't assume that weekly water changes are keeping your parameters up to par, if you want to keep sps you'll need to invest in some test kits and additives...

My experiance with SPS is when they start to die from the base up it has ALWAYS been tied in with my Alk-its usually a drop in KH that triggered it-

thats the first place I would check

not so much a drop but "instability" SPS dont like swings in params-KH being the biggest killer-IME

Yeah it looks like RTN +1 on ALK swing SPS do not like it.

I just tested my KH an it is between 8-9(143.2-161.1ppm) the only thing I have been doing different is adding without measuring Brightwell's Aquatics Alkalin 8.3 KH buffer cause my ph drops a lot. I realize now that's not a good idea. When I get my parameters stable will the bottom part come back?

Sometimes if the branches are thick they can block the light from getting to the bottom and cause some tissue death there.

I also noticed the side dying is the side that not getting direct flow from the power head. I don't know if that has anything to do with it dying that just something I noticed.

IME the part that is blocked from light becomes more a faded color-that pic looke like no tissue

The direct flow has nothing to do with the dying. You mentioned;

If this is anew process it is what I would say is the cause-Alk was my 1st guess since its nearly always the cause-it could be this piece was in the way of the direct dosing, or maybe something else but I am putting my eggs in the Alk basket.

More than likely it wont "encrust" back over, it for sure wont rejuvinate.

I have had to (more times than not) frag just above that dead part otherwise it just conitued to die off. Not saying that is what you will need to do, but I have watched more corals die off while I waited and watched to see if it would stop.

Frustrating, but better to save whats alive than to slowly watch it progress-give it some time and watch it closely, if it is continues to keep dying, frag above the dead area-but most importantly, watch the levels of the KH and get them stable as quick as possible

Here is a pic of one of my torts that used to be a colony, it got ****** when I moved it into my new tank since the Alk took some time to dial in with my CaRx- I had to frag it up and have been watching this spot (bottom right hand side) to see if it is going to stop or continue to receed.

I know it's only been a couple an don't know if I'm getting all worked up about nothing but I've keep an eye on all the parameters an everything is perfect but it seems like the white area is growing. What should I do?

It is continuing-you need to frag it like I mentioned earlier-IMO

I'm getting ready to do the same to the piece I posted-it still may not make it but chances are if all has been stable and still is it will survive, everyone I have ever had to do this with has made it-everyone I sat to see "what happens" kept dying until it was gone.
