Plate Coral

[Fin-up reefing]

So I’ve heard from fellow reefers that dead plate corals can come back from the dead? Is this true and around how long does it take? Does this also work on diaseris corals too? My LFS gave me some dead plate corals that were sitting in one of the tanks. All appear to be freshly bleached out. Any advice is appreciated thanks!

For me, I’ve never been able to keep plate corals more than 6 months, even in perfect condition. I’ve also been surprised tons of times.

Most fungiids can bud from dead skeleton, although some do more readily than others. The only common aquarium species I know of that does so regularly is Heliofungia fralinae. Most plate corals in the hobby are Cycloseris, though I haven’t seen anthocauli being produced in this genus. “Diaseris” (now Cycloseris) asexually reproduce in a different way: they will self-fragmentate into 4 smaller pieces and then regrow. I’m not sure whether what we call “Diaseris” are actually Cycloseris distorta/fragilis or just regular Cycloseris that were cut-up, though.

Interesting and I've read it can take a year or longer to come back?

There’s no set time frame and I highly doubt they would even come back considering the lfs and your tank are completely different

Honestly not sure how long they take to fully regrow; would have to look into the literature for that. I’ve only kept one fungiid: it was identified as a Danafungia, and it hasn’t died on me yet.
