Last week my anti virus started going crazy, kept saying blocked attack. I was using Avast at that time and it was saying the virus was called: Win32:Dropper-gen. I couldn't remove it with the Avast so I did a Google search for it and came up with Spy Hunter antivirus for removing it.

So I downloaded the Spyhunter and gave them their money and did everything it said to do to remove the virus but now my computer locks up so bad I have to shut it down by unplugging it and then restart to use it again for a very short time. Also I can't run any of my programs at all, they won't open at all.

Any suggestions on what I need to do?

Worst case is re-format it.. I had problems in the past and now I have 2 hard drives a small one with my operating system and a 500gig I put everything else on so I can reformat anytime without problems...
Your gonna have to go into the registry and delete it... Google the exact virus you have and it should show you the steps needed to remove it... "don't buy anything" scams!!!! There has been alot of fake anti virus, viruses going around...

I agree, you shouldn't have given anybody money to remove viruses. That's a serious scam. There are plenty of free things on the net that remove these viruses; although, some of those are scams too :)

I think you should reformat and bring your comp to its factory settings. We do that with our laptop from time to time and it runs like new.

those little anti spyware and anti virus programs are usually malware.
i would uninstall it then go through and remove every entry in the registry with it in there.
then i would go search that virus for the steps to remove it rather than trying to find a program to do it for you.

oh yes and you will have to do all of this under safe mode.
i would also call your cc company and reverse that charge. be sure to tell them why

It may have hosed your system.

Try booting into safe mode (google how to get into safe mode if you need to) and then running your AV and other programs like the ones below:

give this a shot:
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware: Malwarebytes

Malware is pretty **** nasty these days and may require you to get it fixed by someone that does it everyday. There are some things that can even infect your bios or MBR these days. Nasty nasty stuff.

i wouldnt reformat. i take it you have another computer to read through as you do this

to go into safe mode while the computer is booting hold the F8 button.
you will want safe mode with network support.

Reformatting will wipe the computer out clean slate... You lose everything pics music files etc... If you have anything on that pc you want copy it to a flash drive and then put windows xp, vista etc disk in and follow the directions... For most this is a last resort since you lose it all... Even your drivers will need to be re installed I wouldn't recommend it without help of someone that's done it before... I would find someone that can just go threw the directory and delete it... "geek squad" lol...

No I am on the infected computer, it just locks up unexpectedly at times. When it does I have to kill the power to it and then restart it.

Chris you need help? You can give me ring on yahoo, I can help ya , I just went through this myself on both my computers.

LOL actually been busy waterfowling....

I haven't done a thing with my computer but it is working pretty well right now....
