Welcome to REEF2REEF @luigid26 Test your salinity and use RO water to bring it to those desired level. Tap water can contain harmful chemicals and metals. Even filtered water isn’t desirable and will contribute to your brown algae problem. Distilled water is good use if you can’t get RO water.

I have a 55 gallon saltwater tank with four clown fish and a goby, it has been running for about a few months I already have brown algae at the bottom and on the glass. But my water level is starting to go down about an inch already from the top and wanted to know what is the proper way or what to use to top it off? Plain tap water ? Or distilled water? I’m not interested in getting a top off system, I am just getting so many answers I just don’t know which one is the right one- thanks in advance!!
Welcome!

Thank you guys so much for the info... tested my water and everything came back perfect as for levels!! I noticed this morning that my wrasse is almost completely black ,very thin and just laying around sometimes upside down... when I feed ,he does come around and grab some food but doesn’t last to long before he just drops to the bottom and looks like he’s almost dead... any suggestions? Thanks!
