The answer is that it’s “unknown”. Furans act against bacteria, Protozoa and under certain light have antiviral properties. I agree with hearing lots of opinions and I also agree with @Randy Holmes-Farley and with the other poster. In that I’m not sure why a poll (which I thought was to gauge opinion) is being taken from people, as you said are not microbiologists, that has a factual answer. This is meant as a question not a critique btw

This is why I keep furan2, melafix, interceptor, Bayer, etc...
On hand... At all times.

I run 2 systems. Sps and lps w zoas...
If I’m running a dip due to some funky funk corrupting the critters I’d like to keep alive, I’m dipping it multiple times!
And more importantly, through various dips!
At that point it’s beyond last resort....
In a closed box, Pandora is more than just alive.

Throughout years of just casual reading, I’ve come to the conclusion that there isn’t much “scientific” anything when it comes to a proper approach to keeping the animals we do, healthy.
You’ll find more info about a parakeet before you did about a wrasse!

Staying on topic, I have to ask how a fact question gets answered by poll.

Does the one with the most votes win and becomes the truth?

In other words, what does one use the result for?

Looking at the responses, The only use is to show that the majority of reefers are wrong, no matter which answer is right.

OT, while this post is correct I would say let us agree that the poll would be a valid way to begin constructing a hypothesis for actual scientific research. I took the poll to be the starting point, not the conclusion.

Disagree. Only for the following reason. The validity of a poll depends on the credentials of the people polled.

Appreciate your comments. I don’t dip anything and I keep nothing on hand. I haven’t needed it. When I’ve tried the remedies it’s a 50 50 proposition. So who knows. The problem is the fact that different stuff in different aquaria release different toxins. We think it’s nitrate it’s phosphate it’s xxxxx. I. Reality it’s the individual things we buy

In other words I think the stuff that survives in an individual tank has more to do with the toxins the individual animals release and how it affects the rest than any other issue. *(unless there a massive problems with parameters everyone here knows make a difference)

Many have made mention of treatment. Best is to focus on prevention. Wash hands always after being in tank(s) and/or invest in Aquagloves. Best purchase I ever made. They're safe-tough-waterproof and Easy to clean. This is an aquarium product, so it is safe for reef tanks

If we think of Zoa Pox as a symptom instead of a disease a poll can be valuable.
That can explain why different methods create different results.
Is there someone here that has defeated Zoa Pox with something else than Furan2?
Personally i would first try really strong flow for 24 hours. (Just by a pump so the polyps are retarded) That has worked everytime i hade brown jelly disease.

What hypothesis do these results suggest?

  1. Bacteria 27.0%
  2. Virus 14.6%
  3. Fungus 35.1%
  4. Protozoa 10.8%
  5. Other 12.4%

I would hypothesize that I was incorrect. That is not much of a starting point.

I hypothesized that I am correct because I don't want to be wrong :p

I did vote for fun though and to stir the pot. The highest number wins! ;Hilarious
