I only get a few days from mine, even though they don't look too dirty the flow through them slows.
I understand. However I don't have a sump nor do I have a protein skimmer. I used to have I bigger tank wit sump and a bubble magus skimmer. But I've gone way smaller. The polyfilter does a pretty good job keeping the quality of the water. I was just wondering do people let it get black? Just because I can not find anything to compare on the internetI tried the whole Polyfil cup but honestly I had better results with the 100 Micron filter socks.

Yeah well, in my small tank they do most of the filtering indeed. My livestock is low. Only two kaudernis and some sexy shrimp and a view tiny snails. I did get polyfilter to keep my water pristine and it does a great job. Just wondering about other experiencesThe thing is they are not mechanical filters they are chemical media like carbon.
They should last a while depending on the impurities they are removing.
They are for removing heavy metals, toxins, ,organics, phosphate, yellowing, copper etc.
Those above are dirty and look like they were used as a mechanical filter like sponge or floss.

I don't think they have an 'expiration'. It's when it's exhausted due to your contaminants. But...it will collect detritus and then that'll lead to nutrients (which it isn't so good at removing). I ran mine a week at a time - little funky looking but nothing indicating anything but normal detritus.
I did find after a while that I didn't need them - since I never saw any heavy metal contamination and the tank was mature I started skipping more and more days and was just fine. I do like having it around just in case though.
That was what I was thinking. There were comments about micron zises. As far as I am aware there is only one zise polyfilter. Not even close to micronsAlso think some people are mistaking polyfilter for polyfill batting ….. they are not the same thing. I run two polyfilter pads 24x7 on my 450 and change them out every month. They do catch detritus and will turn brown as result. manually rinsing them every week keeps them in good shape.
