What does polyp extention indicate?

Not all the time some corals only open at night.
Polyps are there way of feeding...

Inside of a polyp is algae, sps form symbiotic relation ships. The coral allows the algae inside of it to grow and the by product of the algae the coral eats.
I'm sure someone else can break it down better. The algae is what gives it its color. That's why if lighting off corals go brown bc the algae isn't happy and either needs better light to photosynthesize ....

Okay because I have heard they might extend because they are hungry and its not always an indicator of happiness. I ask the question because I'm trying my first acro to see if my lights can support it and I am starting to see a little polyp extention

Most sps can't really "eat" food.
LPS and softies can.
If u do want to put nutrients into the system feed some
Coral frenzy or phyto feast

They do absorb food just on a smaller level but as said above not the same as LPS and softies do. Stoney corals use a great deal of energy to build their stone structure so outside of feeding heavy SPS tank just minerals (alk,Ca, MAg, Iron, ect) i feed my tank once weekly a well puree mix of Clam, fish, seaweed, ect the same as what would float in the ocean at times. I have great growth and because a feed once a week a amount i know my system can handle i have no outbreaks of any type.

Right I know the minerals to keep in check with the stoneys. I'm just looking for positive results out of this test acro. So is polyp extention considered a positive result?

Yes. But give it a month or two to adjust to your system.
If in a few days it browns out and a few more days dies waters not great.


Sps need strong light, flow and clean water, so in a month if its still alive then for the most part ur waters good for sps

I have been keeping a digi, and encrusting montipora and a cup coral for 6 months+. So my water is good for other sps. And I run 2 mp10s on a 50 so my flow is good. The lighting is my only concern. How long does it take to get color back on an acro. I'm testing with a strawberry short cake frag

The encrusting and cup are actually bleaching a little bit from the light now that its turned up for the acro.

It depends on the coral and how stable and well maintained ur water is...
I've had a coral over 6 months and not color up.... But I have had an sps color up as fast as a week....

I had some start showing color in a week with signs of growth and I had some that were brown or green sticks for a year then BAM they color up and start growing like a weed. All depends on placement even if you have all the right parameters. That's to me on of the fun parts of a sps heavy tank is finding its sweet spot.
