Depends on how long the pod is, as to how deep they need to be. You want some part of the pod out of the water, but they do not have to actually out of the water. If that makes sense lol.

In my macro tank, I have pods under the water and above the water. Theones under the water are directly under the lights to allow for the pod to get more light, as it is under water.

For sand, they do not need it. You can clip them to the side of the tank and they will grow roots down until they reach sand or a rock. Just remember, if you let them grow on a rock, you will damage the plant if you try to remove it. Once those roots grab a rock, they hold on lol.

In reality, I like the roots to have to grow down to the sand. That is how you get cool root structures to form. Starting out, I like to have them in the sand, so I can shove a flourish tab bit (break off a tiny piece) in the sand near the pod. This allows the roots to form easily and gives the pod a little bit of easily accessible nutrients.
This tank will have fresh sand and be home to all my nems. Thoughts on the flourish tab in a tank of nems?

Little update.

Macro tank: the expected diatom bloom from new sand and me dosing silicates, as I added more sponges. @najer most these pics are for you.

Zoa and shroom tub: Think I need to frag some stuff in the tub. @LRT can you say shrooms? You enabler, you lol.

Nem tank and sps grow out (oxymoron right!!!!): think I may need to clean the coralline off. That is only 6 days of growth lol. Ever since going 100% t5, it has done this. Bubble tips have split a lot. I have up at 64 when counting. @F i s h y loves nems hehe. @fishguy242 bubba blue lips says hi.

The mixed biocube of randomness has been doing good as well. The rfa are starting to have babies pop up. @Lost in the Sauce, they are nothing spectacular, but most I have collected.

And now the photo dump since I tagged a few people lol. And just for giggles. @Mibu @Erin O @sfin52 @MERKEY @Soren. Do I have a problem with hoarding??????

Such amazing tanks, @Eagle_Steve !
All of your anemones and mushrooms are beautiful, as is your new macro tank. The black sand looks pretty good for that tank, though it also kind of reminds me of freshwater tanks like that as well.

...and, typical for me, my favorite picture is the one including your Fiji bicolor foxface (even though it is obscured by coralline algae on the tank)! How long is your foxface?

Well, for obvious reasons, i share your pain. lol. Haven't gone through this thread yet, but all is well that ends well?
Ohh it got real until we were coming back from Florida and stopped by wwc. She saw the lagoon tank there and after we are done with the last of the remodel the macro tank moves into the house and becomes her tank in her office. So not divorced, wife is now into it as hard core as I am and all is working out well lol.

Forgot these lol.

gbta in the tub. Thought a split vanished (they walk into haddoni sometimes and get eaten lol). This means it went down the overflow, into the tub sump, through the pump for the tub and lived. Crazy little things nems be.

Worked for my wife. She loves snorkeling in mangrove lagoons more than anywhere else. That is what this will be eventually, so she took the bait and got hooked lol.
