Made progress on the floating canopy tonight

Still need to cut the pockets for the lights, mount the anchor bars, sand, fill and paint but making progress.

Walls come down 2.5” below the floor of the canopy. The shades I am 3d printing will raise the lights 1” above the floor. This should help with the lights creep in the eyes and our parlor from glowing blue constantly.

Haven’t gotten any further on the canopy lately.

Having issues with the tank currently. My days of using well water may be over.

Merry Christmas Eve!!

It has been a little while. Tank crashed late OCT. Still do not know the cause. lost 90% of my corals, only 2 heads of duncan and my mushrooms make it. I didn't loose any fish luckily. Pulled/ gave away almost 50 BTA as they were just letting go of the rock and floating around. Wasn't going to wait for them to nuke the rest of the tank.

I have been just letting the tank run since then. Things are doing pretty good and going to start restocking after the new year. Going to head more toward a SPS dominant system with LPS sprinkled in, especially since I have no more BTA.

Got work done on my mixing station. Got my plumbing supplies this past weekend to finish it up.

Also spent this morning playing with fusion and designed my overflows for the Sump of my S1000

With how the extension housing is plumbed the water surface has very little movement and gets lots of nastiness. I will ad 2 of these surface skimmers to the sump, one before the extension housing to clean up the skimmer chamber and one exiting the extension housing to clean up the surface of my frag tank.

I am also planning on revamping my plumbing eventually. Going to drop down to only 4x flow thru the sump. plan is to eventually build a recirculating skimmer and direct feed it so everything that goes down the overflows will pass thru the skimmer. I did this with my old tank ages ago and worked very well. Kept my sump pretty clean and nutrients very low.

I am doing 2 more big water changes,120G and a 60G in the next 2 weeks and then plan to start daily AWC @ 3G a day. This will allow me to utilize the 50G water barrel I have next to my tank that was and still destined to be kalk storage. I will have to refill every 2 weeks which should be rather easy once the mixing station is finally up. Mixing station is 2x 60G barrels.

Going to get a couple easy SPS /LPS frags and see how they do.

Skimmer currently every 4 days and a couple picture of the tank.

Going to rescape the tank this weekend.

Put some time in to it yesterday.
Cleaned out the extension sump, moved the LR from sump into DT and made the divider wall( was missing ) out of eggcrate and added chaeto to the front half. hoping it helps keep the chaeto from plugging up the exit hole on the extension like it had before.
Going to be making a frag rack for the back half of the extension.
Added a powerhead to the extension since it just collects detritus.
Added a Nicrew 100w above the refugium / frag tank

Started rearranging rock in DT and pulling all small rubble and stuff that has been collecting on the sand bed.

Going to try something a bit different.
I pulled the 4x4" filter socks and holder, my Icecap k1-200 is on a 3" shelf and slid it to the left as far as possible, under that shelf is a of rubble and managed to get my old eshopp psk-300 skimmer also installed. I am hoping these two combined will help pull most the waste out, plans are to ad a funnel type input to direct more flow( catch more poop) straight into the skimmer.

Eventually I will build a Direct Fed Recirculating skimmer to sit next to the tank to flow everything from the main overflow thru the skimmer hoping to catch as much as possible and that will then feed into my DIY roller mat.

Worked on the mixing station a bit, bought my ball valves and fittings, thought I had pipe at the house but
I didn't so picking up some today.

Also got dimensions to print a platform to hold the two ocean motion wave makers I picked up a couple months ago. Going to place one on each side of the overflow box and split the 3/4 feed to 2x 1/2 RFG .
I need to print the adapters for the Redsea feed lines to Locline adapters and be able to run locline to the OM instead of hard pipe/tubing.

Tank was a huge cloudy mess from stirring up everything in the sump, both skimmers were going crazy for hours. As of this morning they have calmed down

I warned you that I would be jumping on board and following you. I am also going to invite some of my friends here. #Cronies and #Heathens represent.

I read through your build. First off, sorry to learn about the "crash of '25". That really sucks and I feel bad for you.
Secondly, I dig that you are a DIY guy whenever and wherever possible. I have been and am the same way.
It's taken some time, as it usually does, and it looks like things are coming together with all the DIY. I base this on how many items you have crossed off your "to do" lists, through time.

I see that you use Fusion. I also see that you are pretty adept with it. Is that the free version or do you pay the annual subscription price? I have just now gotten into 3D printing. It only took me 8 years because I started looking at and researching printers and software back in 2017. I guess you could say I was at the airport when my ship came in.

Anyways, like I said, I am here now and the bad news is I am here now.

Yes I prefer to DIY when I can. Especially with the reef stuff.
Machinist by Trade 22years so far - back in 2000-2003 (when DIY was king in aquaria) I ran a website and sold acrylic items to help the Hobbyist build their own equipment. protiem skimmer, Calrx, reactors etc. even was making custom bulkheads from PVC with o-rings instead of ABS

This ranged from acrylic tubing from 1-12" diameter, cut to any length up to 6ft, with or without machining and heating to ad flats for bulkheads etc, flanges and twist locks, bases, lids and even got into making custom tapered acrylic cone flanges for skimmers.

I am in the aerospace field now- programming and running 5axis machines all day. Before i relocated to VA 4years ago, I owned my own shop in CA( lost it to covid)

Fusion is a fully licensed copy. I have my own and also fully licensed thru the shop I currently work.
I am slowly working to set up my own shop again here soon. Just had the electric company out to look into adding another 200amp panel in on the property to power my shop for any future endeavors.

3d printing is fun. Got into it originally about 10 years ago to prototype parts for diesel conversions. I had gotten out of the reefing world and didn't realize how handy it is in this hobby till I got my 75G.

Sorry to hear about the business having to close due to Covid. My wife and I had the same happen to each of the businesses we had, at that time. Like you, we relocated, too, to SW FL from Chicago afterwards.

I have been a DIY reefer since about 1988. I will spare you the pain of going through everything I have built since then. Lots of failures and some successes. I am sure we would get along, very well, in the "real" world.

My friend, Tom @tharbin , pays for Fusion. I am still sitting on the fence about it while I have been trying to learn FreeCAD. Unfortunately, I haven't quite had the time I would like to delve into FreeCAD but have printed some items.

Have you considered going 3 phase to your property or will the electric company not allow it? Perhaps, though, 3 phase will not be needed. I was thinking for the larger machining equipment which depends upon the parts being machined, of course.

How was it you picked Cumberland, VA from CA? It seems pretty random notwithstanding family/friends living there.

Nice tank and I like the seeing people still doing DIY. Back in the 70s and early 80s if you didn't DIY you didn't reef. Now, I'm too lazy and too inept to do much more than some 3d printed parts. I also don't really have the space or patience for it any longer.

I'm sorry to read about the crash but am pleased that your fish made it through it.

It seems like COVID affected a great many of us. I ended up closing my consulting business and retiring during it but unlike you or Chris, we didn't relocate, just dug in and hung on, and on.

Yea the covid thing sucked. I was in alameda county Ca. The first cruise ship with covid pulled into port of Oakland only 20 miles from my shop. Things went down hill fast.

But my brother and his wife decided to relocate across the US to Virginia for work late 2021 and my whole Family picked up and moved within 6 months. I was born and raised in CA. both brother's family, mom/dad grandma. sold houses and fled basically.

anyways... I cant afford / nor willing to fund most hobbies without either it making its own money to fund its self or being able to rely heavily on used market and DIY.

luckily reef keeping can fund its self to a degree and the used market is usually flooded and I like tinkering.

Plus it makes a nice place to sit and have coffee with the wife on weekends.

I am glad we moved, my only regret is my oldest daughter stayed in CA,she goes to school at Davis.heading to MED school soon. That was the hardest thing. leaving my at the time 17yr old in CA to live with her grandma before she moved into her dorm.

The tanks keep me grounded. And Sane along with all the other animals.
