PPBlimpy's S1000 downsize / upgrade

That's a nice haul! Hope you picked it all up for a song and a dance.
$100
Came with a 75G tank and stand which my buddy is buying for $50. Didn't do to bad. Didn't think I was getting all these mushrooms. guy probably had 50-60 more growing on the glass that he didn't want to waste time and scrape off.

i have to much rock for my tank now and another friend that is looking for rock for his 300G he is setting up so i will be selling probably 40lbs rock. will be ahead for a 1/2 tank of gas and 2 hours driving.

Going to start dosing vinegar here shortly to help bring down nitrates. Going to spike with kalk to help negate PH dropping.

If it’s not one thing with this hobby. Had 60g of water mixing. Go to look into the drum to grab my little floating thermometer, to double check the digital and found this broken heater. It wasn’t broken yesterday….

Looks like I am dumping 60g and mixing a fresh batch

On Different note. Anyone have experience with the KH Gaurdian?
Buddy of mine has one for sale at a reasonable price. He liked it but moving halfway across country and selling everything.
Thinking it may be a nice tool since I haven’t invested in a trident and hydros has come out with their tester yet.

Tank is more or less in a holding pattern. I really need to aquascape it properly. I just keep throwing rock in it and leaving it alone.

Stacking rocks like a cave man is my specialty.
But here in the tank after I scraped the front/side

That sucks about the thermometer and dumping the 60 gallons.

Looks nice.

Both!

Vinegar didn't do much for me, I tried 3-5 samples. I've moved to bio pellets

I have a khguardian!

I am going to see how the vinegar does. Just bought 6x 64oz jugs.

Also looking at lanthanum chloride dosing into one of my skimmers, the output of the skimmer I plan to ad a 5 micron sock.

Currently nitrates sit at 60-70 and phos above 1.1.

How do you like the gaurdian? I have a calrx that I plan to setup soon on low and continue dosing kalk.

Thought is to turn the calrx up as the corals grow and keep the kalk dosing steady to take up most my evap.

My tank has a 50g drum sitting next to it for kalk storage.

I am trying to pivot more toward sps /lps dominant where in the past I have done mostly softie/lps

Goodluck!

My system is only 300g. One jar of gfo reduced me from 1.5 phos to .2

Nitrate at 30-60 doesn't scare me.

I have 2x 30 gallon tubs for mixing station.

I've use lanthanum which killed my tangs. I didn't use a sock. Would never use it again too risky.

Kh guardian is good. With all automation its nice when it works and not the best when it doesn't . If you don't have redundancy in testing methodology.

Paying for reagents isn't my favorite.

My tanks mixed.

At 1.5 phos and 50 nitrates I only lost 2 colonies out of my many sps.

It's not the levels imo it's the rapid change...

I appreciate sharing your experience.

My system is 265g. Have 2 65g barrels for mixing but the 50g was just for kalk storage.

I worry about lanthanum and my tangs. Currently have 7 in my tank.

I didn’t like gfo because the swings it caused. Was hoping lanthanum I could bring it down slowly.

I have always ran a high nutrient tank. Figured once I get all/cal stable and can bring down the nutrients a bit I should be pretty stable and in theory have decent growth. I can’t seem to keep chaeto alive in this system so that is out.

Setting up a pulsing Xenia display refugium for ***** and giggles. I ran one 20 years ago and it seemed to work to help and was cool to watch.

I don’t mind testing really, just lazy when it comes to trying to track daily, have Hannah’s for most everything but hate using them.

Don’t want to buy a trident, buddy is closing down his tanks and selling his Gaurdian for pretty cheap.

Would go hydros and ivy eventually but currently running an apex

Do you use the DIY reagent in the KG Guardian?

Played hookie today, cleaned up the tank and room the tank is in. Need to wipe down the stand still. My unicorn makes a mess of the tank always splashing water.

New mushrooms are poofy. And the framer that I thought was dead after the coal rolling incident may be hanging in there. I hadn’t seen green polyps in over a week and some are peaking out.

Also orp hit 302 last night. First time above 300 since octobers crash.

As I stated before I just watch orp for trends- not sure how accurate it is but nice to see. Before the crash the tank would sit between 330-360

If I am not mistaken, @Sean Clark uses or used a DIY reagent for his KHG. Maybe we'll hear from him.
Yes I do use DIY reagent.

I use common HCL from the hardware store (your acid concentration may vary) and mix between 4.08ml and 5.02ml HCL with 1000ml rodi water. I test every batch to ensure consistency.
To test your solution you need a pH measuring device. You can use your KHG to measure the solution if you want.
To test your solution put 10ml of rodi into a vessel, then add 0.01ml of your newly mixed solution and stir. Use your pH probe to measure the pH. The value should be between 3.6-3.9 to be within the acceptable range.
Here is a video showing the process: How to test your KRS
If your tested value is too high then add more HCL to your solution (a little bit goes a long way). I only add 0.01ml of HCL, mix, and test again.
If your tested value is too low then add more rodi water 10ml at a time, mix, and test again.

What you are trying to accomplish is to create a 1 molar (1 mole/L) HCL solution.

After your initial testing on your first batch, you should be able to get very close or at least within acceptable range on your first try for the second batch.
I always aim for a pH of 3.75 to be right in the middle of the acceptable range. That way if any of my measurements are off a little then I should still be good.

My reagent cost me less than $0.05/L
