proper way of sizing a pump

ive always used the 10 x's method to size a pump,is this stil viable or has it changed.

i will be purchasing a 225 gallon tank and wanted to purchase the right pump,but want effeciancy as well.
any recomendations are highly accepted.

A reeflo pump is probably what you want. As for size, it really depends on the amount of water ypur overflows can handle and your needs. I would go with a pump that pumps about 1400gph at whatever head pressure the height your pump will need to push.

it would really depend on if your going to run more off the pump such as reactors or not.

the overflow will have 2 x's 1 1/2" drains
i will be using the herbie method
there will be 6' head pressure
dimensions of tank will be 60 x 36 x 24
sump will be 112 gallons
there will be a reactor hooked up as well
