Protein skimmer help

Hey guys new to the hobby. I just set up my Reef Octopus classic 1000 HOB on my 40 gallon breeder. I was curious if I am doing something wrong or if it is normal for the skimmer to not always bubble over into the trap. It started out foaming over big time those slowed down and is barely foaming over now if at all.

Judging by the brown crap in the collection cup of your pictures it's working fine.
