Pumps that will fit through bung opening?

@Johnd651 how big do you want/need the pump to be? GPH wise not physical size

I wanted to be able to pump it upstairs to the sump for water changes. About 6-8ft, at about 80 gph would be nice (30 mins for 40 gallons).

If you get an external pump, or an inline and pipe it into the drum, you should be fine.

Do they have the ability to lift water up on the suction side or do they need to be gravity fed? Like if i put a dip tube on it, and stuck it into the drum?

That would depend on the specific pump you choose.

In theory, they should be able to suck water in and pump it out. But speeds, and distances vary.

Worst case you mount the pump above the barrel and drop a tube in

You will specifically need a “self priming” pump, if you want it to be able to “suck” water up out of water…

This is why we typically use submersible type pumps!

Alternatively; consider installing a uniseal through the side of the barrel near the bottom and running a non self-priming external pump (more common) next to the barrel!

You might try searching for "Bung mounted pumps"

I haven't purchased one in years, but general industry is full of them. One of my first jobs was rebuilding them for the printing industry.

I don't know if you will find one that is all polymer or in a hobbiest price range.

Sorry but I can’t hear bung and not go straight to Beavis

I liked the idea of being able to seal it closed. Not out of the question... just looking at options.

If your not hard plumbing do you have to use that drum. I pump from the basement to upstairs and through the house to all my tanks with a pond pump and a 50ft python hose. I mix in a brute and store for weeks sometimes with the lid on and evaporation isn't an issue.
I'm not sure why it has to be sealed which as @UncommonSense already mentioned it has to have a vent

EDIT. I use a remote controlled outlet in the basement so I can turn the pump on and off from upstairs. Its much easier than any smart plug that requires an app so I need my phone on me.

I just happened to already have the drum. House is from 1886, it's an old stacked stone foundation that still has some dirt floors. I am looking to be able to close the top after filing with rodi for example, or when mixing.

Nothing is out of the question, just trying to see options to use what I already have before I go buy something else.
