Purchasing a clam

Hello All,
I want to purchase a clam for my soon to be 3 year old tank. Who are the top 5 reputable dealers. Can anyone suggest a type as my first clam? Thank you and I am sure this has already been covered

Well, keep in mind that most sellers only post top down pics of their clams…they look completely different from the front view.

What lighting/distance from light do you have it? I just lost my ASD crocea of nearly 6 mon, likely from slow starvation (12 in under an AI prime 16hd).

For OP, I was very happy with my AquaSD crocea clam--only though major regret was not measuring/accounting for it's lighting needs.

Mine is placed on the top of my rockwork underneath a reefbreeders photon v2. The par is about 220-250 if I recall correctly. I’ve noticed no problems as of yet, but am in the process of upgrading tanks and at that point will likely be placed in a higher light range

This is a Mimosa, it takes up the left hand side of a 34g. I’ve had it on the bottom and recently moved it up on top of some Tonga branch. It does sit on top of a flat of Marco cement, it can be moved if needed. That is an important part in my opinion. It’s not stuck. It’s also to the left of a Kessil 500x light. This has turned into an LPS tank. It’s getting 150 par and doing fine. After I purchased and it’s gained in size I looked for info on Mimosas, can get up to 10 inches. The mantle flows, it’s an attention grabber. Blue with teal running through. Better to find all information you can before settling on one.

What light does it need? My top rocks are getting about 400 par. I have 3 radion G4 running

Pac East rolls them out in stages. He has a couple hundred in stock now. You can also reach them via email on their portal or in their sub forum here.

Video on care below. Once you see his video channel there are plenty of others to help guide you through clam care. I have a maxima that I picked up form him a couple years ago. Happy customer. He knows his stuff and has been in the hobby and industry for a very long time.

If this is your first clam, then I would start with one of the easier to keep species, derasa, squamosa and hippopus. I wouldn’t start with a crocea or maxima as my first clam. The three that I mentioned get pretty big by aquarium standards, so have room for them to grow. All three can live on the substrate or a large flat surface. If you haven’t done so already, buy James Fatherree’s new book on clams, it will provide you with a great deal of knowledge and guidance towards your new tank mate. Clams are awesome, but they do require some specialized care in regards to lighting and stable parameters.

wow gas is already 30,000 dollars a teaspoon. I feel like I am making life decisions at the pump lolol.

You need to try the local frag swaps. I picked up this blue maxima at RAP for $80. There was another vendor there that had some nice very small crocea but he was calling them "rainbows" and wanted $250 for them. Once I heard his price I just walked away from his booth. I would probably have fainted if I heard the price for the bigger clams he had.
