Are there any biological benefits to a sponge like this?

Not sure about biological, but they do serve as a more resilient "canary" than the birdsnest for when things are out of whack. My alk was obviously swinging too much after adding several frags. The sponge started turning brown and after several days started eating away at it. After disbanding dosing alk only at night it turned purple again within a day so it has a very quick reaction time without dying off like a birdsnest. Gonna pick up a trident as soon as neptune opens back up to put dosing on autopilot.
