QT Tank filtration

Can you have too much filtration? I am setting up a 40g breeder, and currently have an aquaclear AC30. I was going to buy an ac70 because the AC30 is too small for the 40g. If I used both, would that be overkill? Was thinking about using both in leu of the AC70 and an airstone.

Is this a QT for observation or medication? Most medications will kill a biological filtration. 10g are better for meds because you will do a 100% water change every 2-3 days. In such a system an airstone and a $10 Hob filter is what you need. Using a 40g as a observation tank would be fine, but you would need to have some established bio filtration. A AC70 should be fine because I assume you are not having a lot of fish in there.

My display tank got ick, so I am moving the fish into a 40G breeder for copper treatment. I have a yellow tang, coral beauty, three damsels, two clowns, a midas blenny, sharknose goby, orchid dottyback, and a royal gramma that I have to quarantine.

The copper will destroy any biological filtration you have. So you will have to figure out how to do 40g water changes every three days for two weeks and maintain the proper levels of copper during that time.

Unless the fish are unable to swim, you can't exactly overfilter a qt tank.
My 40g qt runs multiple 75g rated sponge filters and 2 aquaclear 110s

Brah, you may want to check as I don't think Copperpower or Prazipro will kill a biofilter. If that were the case wouldn't people with FOWLR tanks treating fish in the tank have to recycle the tank and risk a new ammonia spike to their fish.

How much are your water changes on the 40g?

I usually do 50% water changes on a weekly basis with water that's pre-dosed with copper to 2.50 (double checked and adjusted the day of the water change)
Quarantine is fully emptied, cleaned out, and re-started when a batch is finished though to prevent issues with bacteria actively consuming prazi when used.

I think it is the copper you have to worry about. Prazi won't I don't think. It is best to review Eli's video on BRSTV because that is his business. I do what he does.
