Been keeping freshwater for 30yrs, switched to salt 3yrs ago. I love it. I have a 180 and 75 setup, 400 purchased, but not set up yet.
Learned the hard way about quarantining fish. So every fish I have has been through the quarantine process.
My question, I have 2 fish in separate 20 gal tanks in quarantine right now. A gold heart trigger doing awesome, and a clown trigger that isn't gonna make it. Not sure what's wrong with him, I tried everything to save him. Thinking about putting him out of his misery.
Anyway, I would like to start quarantining another fish when he goes. What do I have to do to make sure the bad stuff is out of the tank. If I just drain and refill with fresh water (no salt) will that kill everything?, or should I drain dispose of media and let it sit dry for a few days?, Drop some ice cubes in there, and let the cold temps kill everything, (just an idea).
Thanks

Depends, if your gold heart is doing amazing its possible that the clown trigger is suffering from internal parasites that may not even affect your system. Can you send a video of the trigger? I want to see if he is saveable. What symptoms is he showing?

He faces nose down, very lethargic, doesn't really move his tail unless he has to. He did eat medicated GC / focus
pellets for 2 days before he started showing signs. He also is in 2.0 coppersafe that was put in gradually not all at once. Both fish recieved the same treatmen, but came from differnt places. It's getting worse, he is lying on the bottom now breathing heavy. I would take a pic, but he is in my sons room who is asleep.

Got it, no signs of visible spots and or damage? If thats not the case I honestly say no need to completely overhaul your qt. At the shop when a fish dies due to internal parasites or whatever the reason that system has a water change just in case but we don't take any measures besides that. Now for more potent diseases like ich we do an overhaul of that system and sanitize it.

Thank you for your time, what's included in the overhaul process?

All surfaces should be sterilized filter, sponges, heater tank glass, anything that touches the water. Essentially the eggs of parasites can survive on glass, metal, plastic. To sterilize follow this guide leave the tank full or equipment submerged for min 24 hours I usually let it sit for 48 - 72 hours and I usually just double or triple what this chart recommends (100pm) eg 200ppm -300ppm

Said perfectly, this is how we "overhaul" our systems. Hope this helped, have a great night. Feel free to reach out with any further questions.
