Can anyone tell me if Malus can do well with hawaiian black sand? I know they like to burrow their foot in the sand and this black sand is a larger grain size than most. I appreciate any help with this.

Thanks!

They like finer sands but may do OK with larger size sand. Color does not mater.

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't really focused on the color, just trying to describe the sand I have. I've kept BTAs for years but I'm tired of them getting big, splitting, and spawning in my tank. I want to pull them out and get a malu for my clowns instead since I've read they are mostly sand dwellers and dont get too large.

So If I provide an otherwise suitable environment for it, you think the larger grain sand would still be alright?

One last thing - do you know if LED is strong enough lighting for this species? I have a hydra 26 HD about 24" above the sand (it's a shallow tank).

Thanks for your help sir!

My Malu has been doing well in a crushed coral sized substrate (Tampa Bay Saltwater live sand).

Mark - that's great news, thanks for chiming in! How long have you had it?
