Hello everybody my name is John and I’m from Greece, I’m new to the hobby and I got a lot of questions that I need someone to help me with! In Greece we have some forums for the hobby but generally I think everyone takes more information from other international forums like yours! Thanks in advanced for your answers and I hope I will keep this thread for my ‘’Random Questions’’.
A little of my story: main tank 330 liters and sump 100 liters, some kilos of dead rock (I don t know how many but I think It’s enough, check my photo), bare bottom, skimmer Tunze 9012, water pump jebao dc 6000, wave maker 1 Jebao rw8 (I had 2 but after a year my first died), temperature controller eliwell ic915lx connected with a Schego heater titanium 300watt for the temperature to be at 24.5 to 26.5 °C and a water level control system by haquoss. In my sump I change carbon media evry20 to 30 days and I have a phosphate reactor that I change every 2 months. I change 40 liters every week and I add 30 ml of special blend. My light is a custom led with 5 canals of 12 3watt led each but we can talk later about this.
Let’s start with my questions. After a long time more than 4 months and after some water tests I found nh4 0, no2 0 no3 ~5, I bought 2 amphiprion percula to start with and some snails. Everything seemed to be fine until after 34 days one of them got fully white and died in one night. All these days I did my routines as usual, nothing changed and no imputes, I didn’t know what it is but after 1 day the second one died too… I was not so happy but I made a water change about 40 liters as usual and after 3 days I thought it was a good time to add another pair and a cleaner shrimp. I lost the pair again after a few days from the same parasite (as a read I think it is Brooklynella). Today, one week later the shrimp and the snails are ok in the main tank. I don t want to put another fish again soon because I know that Brook is still in the water waiting. I read about quarantine tanks and I said that I will start using one before every fish gets in the main tank.
1. How long do I have to leave my main tank fishless so that brook dies? I read that 8 weeks are ok but I need responsible answer.
2. In the future I want to put corals inside the tank, do I need a quarantine tank for the corals too? Or it’s ok if I just dip the coral with some kind of liquid from the store?
3. If I need a quarantine for the corals, can it be the same as for the fishes?
4. How long do I need to have my fish in the quarantine before I transfer it to the main?
5. When I get my fish in the quarantine do I have to put some kind of Seachem paraguard even if the fish is ok, or I have to wait to see if something goes wrong and then start using it?
6. Is there anything (reef safe) I can add on my main tank now that it is fishless so that Brook dies without losing my shrimp and snails?
7. A very general question that I always had is that in a reef tank is there any rule of what to add first? Fishes or corals?
That’s all for now thank you very much and I hope you can understand my English. I hope to help any other new members with these questions and I can tell that I learned early that a quarantine is needed. As my tank is getting older I will have more questions to add in this post!
