Hey guys,

I've noticed on a few on my larger palys--grandis, nuclear winters, nuclear green, that the size of the colony is often limited by the rock surface they are initially on. When I place a larger ceramic disc underneath to encourage expansion of the colony, the particular paly's mentioned just don't want to expand onto the disc. I have a BB tank, was wondering whether gluing sand on the disc would help..

appreciated any insights
thanks

Can you provide a pic? My palys and zoas pull some acrobatic moves growing across rock work so i'm surprised to hear they won't go down onto a disc.

If that is your issue, apply epoxy between the edge of the colony and larger ceramic disk and roughen surface.

Thought the same thing, but i've seen massive colonies grow on glass before, can't imagine the surface would be an issue. Wondering if the disc is moving at all from flow; if it's preventing the polyps from attaching.

If you are just trying to frag them, then cut the disk and glue it to another disk. Do a search for member joshporksandwic, he did a good video about a year ago on how to frag them.

thanks guys--I have alot of zoas and palys that grow on everything, just not sure with these larger species I cited since I moved to a BB tank from sand a few years ago, why they haven't expanded. These species in particular for me did much better in the sand where they seem to require more than most others to build their base. Grandis palys are very common--I just need to know they you guys don't do anything in particular in a BB setting to perpetuate growth in this species. thanks
