Hi reefing friends,
Today was a really sad day for me. I hadn’t ordered any corals for almost a year due to a recent move, but I finally saved up enough to buy a dream coral piece. I won’t mention the price, but it was a lot.
I struck a deal with a well-known reefer I’ve been buying from for years. I was told winter shipping wouldn’t be an issue, so I didn’t give it a second thought—even though I normally always ask to confirm a heat pack and proper insulation.
Unfortunately, the UPS gods had other plans and the package was delayed by a day. I chatted with the seller and was told, “Don’t worry, it’ll be Gucci.” The next day, I literally flagged down my local UPS driver and picked it up directly.
When I opened the box, I was shocked and horrified—there was no heat pack, and the corals were reading below 50°F. I immediately contacted the seller and sent photos. They said they’d send a replacement by the end of the year, but I had to fight just to get 50% refunded, because they claimed it was UPS’s fault and that everything would’ve been fine if it had arrived on time.
For context: my destination temps were in the single digits, and the package passed through the Kentucky UPS hub where temps were also in the single digits.
So I’m asking you all—if this were you, would you ask for a full refund?
I’ve never received a winter coral shipment here in the Northeast without a heat pack. UPS delays are an uncontrolled variable, but not including a heat pack is controllable, and in my opinion would’ve resulted in the same outcome: dead corals.
What would you all do?
Thanks in advance,
A very deflated, non-fluffy reefer
