Here’s the deal. I have dreams and aspirations of having a beautifully full mixed reef tank in my office. My office reef tank has been up and running for close to a year now. I’ve been really slow at introducing new fish and coral for 2 reasons: (1) Because of finances (geez this hobby is expensive) and (2) I wasn’t sure how much maintenance I would be able to handle inside my daily workflow. At this point, I’ve been slowly collecting corals and refining my setup, and here’s what I currently have (I’ll attach a few photos below).

40 Breeder with a DIY Fiji Cube All-In-One filtration setup. I’m running a simple media floss (changed daily or every other day), BRS carbon, Marine Pure, and rubble rock in the first chamber. My heater and Aquatic Life Nano Skimmer in the second chamber. My third chamber houses my return pump, Tunze Osmolator setup, and pump/return for a media reactor (running AquaLife Phosphate Remover) housed in the stand below. I perform weekly 5-gallon water changes, and I’m super meticulous about having a clean tank. No sump (obviously) or refugium. All of this has allowed me to maintain ultra-low nutrients.

However, the ultra-low nutrients are beginning to affect some of my coral’s coloration. Recently I’ve noticed my Favities, Challice, and Montis turning slightly pale. Even some of my zoas have been mad lately. I’m also seeing a bit of cyano beginning to collect on my sand bed (I have increased flow to remedy this). I have a massive haul from WWC on the way from their Tax Refund Sale, and I want to make a few adjustments to ensure their success.

Current Tank Parameters:
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 0
Phosphates: 0.02

Alk: 8.7
Cal: 450
Mag: 1320
Salinity: 1.026
Temp: ~77 degrees

I dose BRS 2 Part, Brightwell Coral Amino, and carbon dose 5 ml of vinegar (which I probably should halt for now). I also feed LRS Reef Frenzy and BRS Reef Chili.

Today I dialed back my skimmer to try and increase my nutrients a bit. I’m considering beginning to dose nitrates, but before I do that, I’m actually thinking about increasing my bioload by adding a few more fish.

Current livestock:
2 Clowns and Nem
1 Yellow Watchman Gody and 1 Pistol Shrimp
1 Splendid Dottyback
2 Blue Chromis (two others jumped out of the tank a year ago)
Standard Cleanup - Various snails and (1) Emerald Crab

So what would you do? Would you begin dosing nutrients or add new fish? What livestock would you recommend (I want color and activity)? Tang alternatives? Any and all recommendations welcome!

I would get rid of the marine pure and phosphate remover first.
Cheers! Mark

Do you really think those small Marine Pure balls are reducing my nitrates that much?

I would only remove(slowly take out) the phosphate remover. The marine pure has a lot of beneficial bacterial that could be essential in your nitrogen cycle. Wouldn't want to crash it. In terms of nutrients, I don't think dosing can hurt, I've been doing it whenever I see an unbalance. You can also start overfeeding a bit.

Why not dose Nitrate? IMO, you’re in the perfect situation. You have a net zero environment where you can control your levels precisely. KNO3 is a super cheap way to dose

I have increased my Reef Chili feeding from 3 days a week to 5-6 days. It’s an office tank so I obviously skip feeding them on my days off, although I stop in to feed often on the weekends when I have time.
I think this (feeding reef chili often) will help but it also feeds unwanted pests mainly vermetid snails and aiptasia, if they are already in your system anyway. If it were my system I'd remove the GFO and try and get measurable nitrates via feeding, dosing, whatever. Then see how my phosphate and nitrate balance going forward and make adjustments based on that. I wouldn't worry about keeping uber low phos, unless you get over run by algae, in which case maybe more algae eaters are in order or perhaps a shorter photo period.

Either a small tomini tang (certainly pushing it size wise) or an algae blenny are a decent choice IMO. Both would increase nutrients, especially the tang, and help head off potential algae problems from the increased nutrients you're going for.

Use stump remover. Mix it with ro water and dose your tank accordingly. Had amazing luck with this. Keep my nitrate between 10-25. Just copying a pro I know

You don’t seem to have any major algae outbreaks. I am doing a triton system from the start of my new tank. Unlike you, I am dosing, have an active refugium and have some grape calurpa in the main tank, that I am trying to control. I also had 0 nitrates and 0 phosphates which seemed to starve my corals. The past few weeks I have been dosing phos and nitrogen to get my levels past 0, with some success. All while keeping my Alk, cal and mag level.
I also have a haul coming from @WWC, and hope to have success and color.
Everything in time. Nothing good comes quick in this hobby.

Feed more...even if don't eat it all. Simpler than dosing nitrates. Get some shrimp or snails if not ready for fish. Always add more po4 media.

I like Tailspot Blenny...some algae control, not much. Great little personality.

Have any recommendations? I want active colorful fish but also something that serves a purpose.

Everyone has their personal favorites. You can check my build thread for mine. In a smaller tank you want fish that don’t need a lot of room. Cardinals, grammas, firefish.

Stop vinegar dosing, stop phosphate remover, feed more/ get another fish, stop protein skimmer, clean filter less frequently. You have lots of options!
