Red Sea tank fail

With all the great other suppliers available and recommended, can’t see how they are going to stay in the business, if you can’t hold water.

Should go north of 20 years easy for a well constructed display.

Even bottom stuff is more reliable.

They stay in business since these tanks are at every LFS and most people who go to an LFS are not members of forums. So they think that's the best gig in town and a year or so later, they find out.

I agree, quite a shame, we trust our livestock to them, they should take better care.

I was working alone, emptying my neglected 180G in a fish room with a concrete floor sloped for drainage…

I used a 1.5” ID tube to start a siphon, draining it into a brute trash can; allowing me to vacuum up/collect the sand…

Just what overflowed from the trash can equated to nearly two inches of water on the floor packing up to drain out…

So this is my second Red Sea tank what’s bust its seams on me. Still in warranty but what’s the point getting another Red Sea for that to fail a few years down the line. I’ve seen a few g2 tanks fail also.

Can anyone recommend a decent reliable tank?

Sorry to hear this about your tank. Just curious how long did you have this last one for before it leaked.

Low iron glass scratches easier than normal glass whether its starfire or optiwhite.

Tank prices are crazy anymore. $3000 for a sub 100g tank is insane. I have looked at Glasscages and while all tank prices are outrageous anymore these seem better priced than some. I get a lot of the time these are kits and some of the tanks are very high end. In '15 I got a marineland 180g rr and a harwood stand and canopy for $3000, the stand and canopy were 3/4 of the price. Marineland tanks are not high end. That combo today is over $5000. I would not be spending anywhere near that on a redsea tank after seeing this type of thread so many times.

Sorry this has happened hopefully you did not incur too many expensive repairs to fix the spillage. Also hope you were able to save the inhabitants.

They are more than crazy. So blah blah windows. I priced out the glass. There is no cost in the glass. PERIOD. It's cheap through all my vendors. It has to be the demand and build. The one issue I have with glass cages and this might have changed since I last talked to them, is the freight cost. The tank was going to ship FED EX Express. Not ground or freight, EXPRESS. And the cost was 80% price of the tank! That is insane to me. Now I am not going to pretend to know the in and outs of shipping, although we ship, but why not make an account with a dedicated company that can move a tank freight with a lift gate and such? Waterbox makes custom tanks and the shipping was flat, I think 129 with a freight company in my area. Even that stupid SC aquarium had a company they used. Sorry ranting.

It sort of sucks because I would love to buy a custom tank and not need these kits, but man, I mean come on. I know it's art, I DO! but 5k to 10k for a 90 gallon?!? SHUT THE FRONT DOOR. Over 12k for a 125? I mean that is just crazy to me. I miss the old days where you got a rock solid tank for a few grand and the shipping wasn't Fed Ex for over 800 dollars.

So I don't blame people going to Red Sea and the like, I don't. It's beyond a luxury item, now we are in the realm of showing off.

I was joking to one of my installers the other day that I wanted to order some low iron for a fish tank and see what I could make. He just shook his head. Then I showed him an old quote for a tank with the dimensions I got last year, and he was like, "If we do this I want a raise, this is better than owning a marijuana grow!" LOL!

Anyway, sorry about your red sea. I wasn't following you. But you make two this week on red sea explosions. There was one last week, and two the week before that. It's been a tough summer.

Keep in mind, I was intentionally overflowing the brute with water siphoned from the tank; using the brute as a gravity separator to collect sand/gravel I was siphoning out during the teardown!

The fish room is all concrete floors, and stem walls, so water damage was a non-issue, but just the siphon flow from a 1.5” ID hose was enough water to make water pack up nearly 2” tall trying to drain out a 3ft wide doorway!

Now, I was flowing MAYBE 30gal/minute… if all the water in even a 55g tank let go all at once; it would be an utter disaster within the immediate vicinity…

I actually seem to recall that BRS added a short clip during one of their videos from roughly a decade ago which showed a security camera clip (likely from YouTube too) of a 300+ gallon tank having the entire front pane just pop off completely; subsequently forcing all the fruniture in that living room straight out, completely through the building walls…

Yeah, I have no room in my life for any of that.
The strength of the tank and system has always been a main component of the equation for me.
I've seen a few videos myself and they are sad.

Oh look another one of these threads…. This is such an issue and they do nothing about it! I hope you were able save livestock.

I went to an Aqueon after my red sea tank and liked it for the price. But I found a used planet aquarium and its by far the best tank! Also have an innovative marine nano thats okay, not sure about the bigger models. Hope that helps!

G2, and G2+ tanks are failing, too… usually peeling from the top of the vertical seams, or center of the front and/or rear long pane bottom seam… sometimes visible as a distinct “bubble”…

Black silicone hides this bubble if it isn’t against the glass pane you are viewing through; examine each possible glass:glass silicone seam through both glass panes involved for any signs of silicone peeling away from glass, making a large, usually ovaloid or amorphously shaped bubble…

Innovate marine or waterbox for sure ! Search Facebook marketplace, a lot of people jump in balls deep and drown even faster. So there’s plenty of like new ones out there !
