We are going to continue discussing the reef aquarium facts submitted by our members. Do you agree or disagree? What are your thoughts?

Fact #66

Not all synthetic sea salts are created equal. Come to think of it, even batches vary within the same brand!

Truth or False? What else might we need to learn on this subject? Please also share any pictures that may pertain to the subject. ;)

Definitely true. Although most (all?) namebrand salts will work, they all have varying levels of macro and trace elements. One should be careful when switching from one brand to another, especially if he is dosing.

the only possible answer to this question from a scientific observation level is absolutely true.

Nothing is ever measured to be exactly the same in observing the universe.

But is there important differences? Possibly not.

For just a fish only tank you could even use rock or table (non iodized) salt. and the fish would live.

And if you dose calcium/alk/magnesium almost any of the commercial salt mixes work well.

Especially if you do no water changes and use algae to balance out and stabilize the system.

But then if you maintain your tank wiht massive frequent water changes and nothing else (like algae), the differences in brands and batches within a brand could make huge differences.

just my ramblings.

Worth at most .02
