Hello everyone I have a question about this skimmer. I picked it up used and I’m having issues since I took it apart to clean it. I put it back together pretty straightforward but it’s putting out so much bubbles in the sump. Idk if something fell out or maybe putting it together isn’t as straight forward as I thought.

It looks to me like the wedge pipe (red) isn’t seated into the coupler (white) very well; causing bubbles to escape there… — try tightening that part and see if the micro bubbles go away!
Hey! I just checked that small red pipe and it’s as far in as it goes. I think maybe there’s a o-ring or gasket that fell? Idk

That pipe opening should be facing the inlet of the skimmer housing

Im not really sure what you mean. I’ve taken it apart now and put it back together a few times as per their instruction video but still bubbles everywhere lol

The top has a muffler with a tube that runs down to the pump. Pull hose from the muffler (barrel) and blow through it to assure there is no air restriction which too would cause this.

I just I tried this doesn’t seem any bubbles are escaping . I’ve seen an email via the reef octopus site last week but one one’s returned my email. the video I saw on their site shows the lower portion on the skimmer doesn’t have bubbles mines does. I know there’s one o ring around the air adjustment pipe and one around the skimmer cup part that connects to the skimmer. Are there any others? Maybe I need to raise it? It says in their skimmer’s required water height of 6-8 inches my sump is 9.5 inches water height none adjustable. But I did put in a skimmer stand that’s about an inch so it’s sitting in 8.5 inches of water. Would that half inch make such a difference?

Hmm… it technically could… try sticking another 1” spacer under it? — little lengths of PVC pipe work great!

Yes, try to raise it as it appears to be seated at the bottom

I added another section to the skimmer stand now it’s 2 inches. Still I’m having the same issues the skimmer keeps over flowing the collection cup and micro bubbles go everywhere. Theres only 3 little fish in the thank so maybe the bio load isn’t there yet but wouldn’t the skimmer just not produce skimmate?

Does it have a “bubble plate” after the pump outlet in the skimmer body? (Can’t tell in the video)

The skimmer normally just wouldn’t produce much, or any appreciable skim of any off color if the bio load was too low…

Let’s circle back to that red pipe; that’s usually a water height adjustment for the inside of the skimmer! — is it possible you have it mostly to fully closed? This would definitely cause a cup overflow!

Alternatively, have you pulled the Venturi off the pump intake to inspect for a partial clog? — this will cause the pump to move more water than intended!

Yes there’s a bubble plate that the pump sits in above the Venturi.

I’ve adjusted the red pipe in both directions but doesn’t seem to matter, I’ve even played with the pump seed also doesn’t do much. When i first received the skimmer and placed it in the tank it was just over flowing the collection cup but after taking it apart a few times and cleaning it seems to just do both now over flowing and spew out tons of bubbles. As per their terrible directions everything is installed correctly.

I have no checked the venturi but before putting it in the sump i ran it for a day in water and bleach. I assumed it would have cleaned any salt or algae stuck inside but when i get home tomorrow I’ll take it apart and check

These two will dictate operating water height in the skimmer, typically!

This might be a good thing to check! Some sessile invertebrates make hard calcium shells, particularly in high flow areas!

If the air inlet port of the Venturi has the skeleton of something in it, or even just general gunk partially obstructing it; you would get an excessive amount of water in the skimmer body!

I did see some posts on here about the T fitting rotating with the red pipe which it shouldn’t maybe the adjustment I’m doing are not correct since the T is rotating with the red pipe that controls the water level.

I’ll take it apart for a deep clean tomorrow, IDK how a company like reef octopus has such terrible installation instructions.

Yes this is an issue! The T fitting should be pointed as shown in the diagram, and should not rotate when the red pipe above it is adjusted to control skimmer water level!

To be fair; the company is from China… — they make great skimmers though! (When you dial them in, that is!

Do you have the same skimmer? If so how did you fix the pipe so it doesn’t rotate along with the adjustment pipe?

I bought it used for a good price but now I’m getting annoyed, I had the Tunze internal skimmer before and loved it except for the contact micro bubbles

I do not, I have a much older reef octopus 200INT classic!

Wait, it’s the short length of red pipe below the tee fitting that’s rotating?

I believe mine’s welded/cemented on, though I have never pulled on it hard enough to find out!

I’m sure you’ll get it working! I’m suspicious that your problems are predominantly related to the outlet side of the skimmer, and can be resolved!

I’m not sure if the small red pipe rotates along with the skimmer, I do know the T fitting rotates with the red pipe. They’re not glued together but i did see someone said that was reef octopus solution for not having the T fitting rotate.

You could probably mechanically fix the T fitting in such a way that it is still removable… I’ll have to think on that one…

Let us know what results you get from rotating the red pipe separately from the T fitting, and if you find any obstructions to the Venturi air inlet?
