Reef Roid useage

Hey all,

I just picked up someReef Roids for nano for the first time. I have been feeding all my larger corals frozen mysis for the last few months but I wanted to try out the roids. Does anyone spot feed their montis with this? I can’t find any direct answers online and I don’t want to cause any problems. (My Duncan and Candy Cane love them btw)

I have a mystic sunset encrusting monti. I tried feeding it reef roids but most of the time, it seems almost burned by it. There would be some stringy mucous type stuff coming off the monti. Then it started bleaching badly and I thought I killed it. I stopped feeding it and turned my whites down by 30% and it is slowly recovering. I don't know if the bleaching was the lights, the reef roids, or both, but I won't be feeding that particular coral any more.

ETA: I mix with water and spot feed with a syringe.

I used to spot feed my zoas, acans, and blastos when I first started using it and it was too much of a hassle for me. So now I just broadcast feed any coral food in the tank and they are all doing just fine.

Yes, you will be losing uneaten food in the water column, bit the same goes for spot feeding when the coral pukes it out.

If your phosphate is low, it’s best to just broadcast feed it so it breaks down into nitrates and phosphate.

Go easy with it though! I learned the hard way that stuff will ruin your water quickly but it works well so use it but go very slow. use half to a quarter of what they recommend on the bottle and work your way up. I wish I had someone tell me that 2 years ago:(

Same here. It helped contribute to the “happening” that I experienced a few months ago. Lost some corals and have a tank FULL of an unidentifiable algae.

Yeah, I think I’m gonna use it very sparingly. I have a full on algal bloom going on and don’t really know what to do about it. I’ve removed what I can by hand, have done plenty of weekly weather changes, and have the best algae munchers in the tank, but it will not go away. Everything is doing okay, but I’m scared it will soon take over my corals. Is the Fritz Algae Clean Out any good? I’m scared of having a massive die off of it and sending my parameters all out of whack.

I direct feed it to my LPS Corals ,, and the one Monti I have in the tank ,, does the Monti eat it ,, not really sure :) you know when a Chalice or a Favia eat ,, the Monti, not so much ,, I feed right before a water change ,, or earlier in the week ,, it depends on what my Phosphate and Nitrate numbers are doing ,,

I like Reef Roids but it drives phosphate straight through the roof. My phosphates were at .09ppm, I then fed Roids everyday for a week, when I tested phosphate before my next water change I was at .27ppm. I was just target feeding. My corals love it, especially my trumpet and mushrooms. Now I just feed a couple of hours before my weekly water change. This way they can eat and phosphate doesn’t get a chance to explode.

I was always told if you are dealing with any algae issues don’t feed your corals. Just fish sparingly. The corals will be ok it’s not worth it to take a chance to make the algae worse.

I spot feed all of my corals Reef Roids once or twice per week. SPS, LPS, zoas, mushrooms, etc. They all seem to love it and I haven't seen any bad reactions. It does raise PO4 quite a bit, but I do auto water changes and can turn on my GFO reactor if PO4 gets too high.

I’ve been using roids for a year and love it. Definitely helps color my corals up. I feed that along with mysis to my lps corals, and direct feed to my zoas. I feed Friday evenings and perform a water change Saturday mornings. Specifically to keep excess nutrients to a minimum. I measure the amount of roids carefully on a small digital scale per the water volume in my tank. Hope this helps
