I have always used reef salt for my aquariums. Recently however a friend of my wife got out of the hobby and is selling her stuff. She has offered us 1.5 buckets of tropic Marin salt for $50. How important is using reef salt and if I were to use this salt what additives should be added?

I used to use Tropic Marin until the last couple buckets arrived as rock-solid bricks. That said, you could use this salt. However to be 100% sure of what is needed as far as dosing, you should test the levels of it when you mix it up. Then you can compare it to your current levels and go from there.

If you keep up with water changes generally your trace elements should be replenished as long as you don't keep too many corals that require and utilize higher concentrations of trace elements. Using a good quality salt like Tropic Marin which you have will help keep the trace elements in check without having to add additional supplments.
