Just wanted to post this somewhere. I have a reefbreeders v2 that had 2 400nm"s and 1 420nm led out. After doing some consulting i cannot get the boards so i decided to take things into my own hands. Soldered up the bad leds and its working. Pardon my bad solder job. Since there are 10 leds in that bank and 3 are out i will lower it by 30 percent so to not over heat the existing leds.

Since there are 10 leds in that bank and 3 are out i will lower it by 30 percent so to not over heat the existing leds.
More than likely the driver circuit is a constant current design.
1 led or 8 ...at say 100% they all are running the current set point. Pretend it's 350mA
I in circuit or all.
Only thing that will have changed is the sum of the led voltages on that series string.


Now you do lose light of course but the remaining LEDs current will not change.

Saying it another way the remaining ones won't run brighter because there are fewer.

Since there are fewer you already decreased the output by 3/10.

Dimming it just loses more. It will ( should) protect the remaining LEDs but technically not for the reason you think.

Using fake but probably close numbers your violets might run 350mA at 4v
At 100% that's 10 * (.350 * 4) = 14 w
Losing 3 is 7 * (.350 * 4) = 9.8w
The .350 * 4 is the wattage if an individual led
1.4w

Oh and likely at 50% you still run at .350A but only at 50% of the time. Averages to .175A
350.... .0......350....0 .....ect. 50% duty cycle.
Your effective wattage if you have all 10 is now 7w.

In much fewer words . No need to dim the remaining LEDs.They are running no different then when there were 10.
Only collective output changed.

Very interesting. I think I said somewhat the same thing . Some thing like 10 x 3w= 30 but not really .... I just didn't understand the concept. Gonna study this till it makes sense.
 
Talked to reef breeders and they said to do it with a wire and sand down board to the copper to do so. Board aren't available but waiting for confirmation. Last is to use clear nail polish to coat the board from corrosion. Obviously we need to cover the holes. More to come.
 
Cheaper and safer to just buy new led light… lololol old ppl and their diy to save a dolla.
