Hello everyone. I was hoping someone can shed some light on a new setup that I’ve spent hours trying to dial in.

I bought a Second hand reefer 170 system with sump, Reef octopus skimmer and sicee 5.0 return pump for my son as an upgrade since he has spent some time in the hobby and he is still very happy and interested with it.

Guy says this system was running perfectly but I find the flow is way too much for this system unless I’m doing something wrong.

I can’t for the life of me dial it in by the valve. I have it fully open and the water level is still a tad higher than the drain, and the flow back into the sump is way too much IMO.

Would this pump be too much power for the drain to drain before being filled back into the rear chamber?

And I have the pump set to the lowest setting on the front dial.

Thanks for your input.

The simple answer is yes, a 5.0 is too much pump for the small drain plumbing on this tank! (1,321gph max flow!)

A 2.0-3.5 would be better suited; or anything in the ~500-750GPH max flow range!

Thank you for your reply I appreciate it. Time to source out a new pump.

Happy to help!

The existing pump would still be great to keep around as a utility pump to do the likes of water changes!

Also, it would make an excellent return pump in a system with physically larger drain plumbing!

I actually thought of selling it but I think you’re right, I’m going to keep it now especially thinking for a back up to my 300g.

Great point appreciated that.
