As a very experienced clam keeper I highly recommend NOT adding filter feeder food. Try it and you will 100% see the clam “coughing” and blasting out said food. For a struggling clam that energy expense could do it in. No offense at all to vetteguy, but I have been through at least 50 clams over the years and not once has any ever not had a negative reaction to feeding. Again to show I’m not some clam killing schmuck, my last 4 clams lasted me a nearly a decade. Currently have the monster derasa that’s just over 9 years in my care along with 2 Gigas. All very healthy and all very very ticked when filter feeder food hits the water. Nothing good happens fast in this game. Keep conditions correct and you’ll be fine..unless it dies overnight, they tend to do that too....

Updated pic of today. The outgoing siphon looks very small in this clam and very close to the incoming. Not sure what to think of it.

I can also report that it attached itself to the hammock rock I burried under it in the sand.

He looks much better! If hes attached he might like it better if you angled it so the mouth was a bit more away from the sand.

That's a fantastic sign!

It's not a satisfying answer, but as others have said all you can really do is wait and watch. I have found the more fussing you do over them they worse they do, but yet I always wish there is more I can do to help them!

Maybe it is wishful thinking but it looks like its also extending its mantle a bit more. I will give it another week and then post a new photo for comparison.

Update. It opens up further now and seems to have improved in color. More to the blue side than brown.

Can anybody tell me about the mantle extension of a Squamosa? I don't know how much is normal, I tried Google images but get very different results.

Well, I think it's getting there. I also think I see a hint of growth on the shell but too soon to tell for sure or to catch it on camera.

My friend had a couple clams die before. Before they die, they were looking good because they open up a lot. Then, we found out they actually try to get as much light as possible so they open up a lot.

I add phyto and oyster eggs once a week and see Good response. It is not necessary as light for zooallethe is more important as is marine snow occasionally. Here is mine after adding oyster eggs

These guys get irritated every time particulate food gets ingested. They cough it out. For smaller and or weaker clams that energy expenditure can spell certain doom. If they ingested the food why the coughing response? The derasa can blow water out the top of this 24” deep tank. I still stand by by original statement.

With all flow off, create a small cloud of phytoplankton just over the top.
He will pump several times.
Fed, but don’t overdue, once a week max, until he goes full mantle.
