Hello Reef2Reef!

I have a Red Sea REEFER 425 G2+ with the stock 5500 L/h return pump, but I’ve noticed it’s not pushing much volume unless I run it at 90%. I also use Hydros with their wave controller. I’m thinking about upgrading my return pump but not sure if the Reef Octopus VarioS is a good option or if I should go with SICCE. Abyzz would be amazing, but it feels like overkill for my needs. Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Did it push the volume you wanted at the beginning? If so maybe it needs a cleaning. If you are looking to upgrade I have the SICCE sdc 9.0. I previously had the vectra s2 it was wasn't up to the task so I upgraded and couldn't be happier. Cheaper than the vectra equivalent with a longer warranty.

Have you timed your return with with a gallon container to see what its actually pumping? Flow through a sump can be deceiving. Take a 1 gallon bucket and time how long it takes to fill using your return line. Anyway you can't go wrong with a sicce the sdc 9 I have is a beast.

What size hose are you running? I ran some tests before setting up a 425 and it makes a huge difference.

With a Varios 6 > 19mm ID hose > tank I was struggling to push 1500LPH at under 70%.

With a Varios 6 > 32mm pipe > UV > 32mm tee > tank I'm pushing 1800LPH at 45%
