I’m looking for some guidance on selecting Abyzz return pumps for my system, and the clock is ticking with the current Black Friday deal about to expire. I currently have a Red Sea Reefer-S 1000, which is approximately a 210-gallon display with a 55-gallon sump. It includes dual 3/4” returns.

Right now, I am running two Reef Octopus VarioS-8 return pumps, each at around 40%. These pumps are rated at 2,700 gph each. I’m interested in switching to Abyzz primarily for the increased reliability, but I am unsure which model or configuration would be the most appropriate.

Specifically, I’m trying to decide between the following options:
  • A single A100
  • Two A100s
  • A single A200
  • Two A200s
I’m also uncertain whether it would be worthwhile to purchase the IPU controller for my application, where the controller will be installed in the cabinet, near the sump.

Obviously, Abyzz pumps are a significant investment, and I’m working within a budget. That said, I would rather slow down the build and buy the right equipment once, instead of compromising on such a critical component.

Given the system size and my current setup, what would you recommend in terms of pump model(s) and whether or not to include the IPU controller?

Thank you in advance for your time and guidance.

I run 2xAbyzz A200's on a 450gal system. I love my A200's - super quiet, super reliable! For newer builds, I always go for dual return pumps for redundancy. Therefore, I think 2xA100's will work fine for you.

IPU: I don't think that it's necessary.

Having said that -- Red Octopus VarioS pumps are powerful & reliable as well. You can just add another one for redundancy? Nothing wrong with "economical" return pumps - I have a Jebao pump that has been running non-stop for ~5 years w/o any issues.

I run A200 and A100 on my 270. You can do the same or 2 x A200 at lower speed. Needs decent amount of space in the sump for 2 A200s if you go that route as they will quickly move the water out of that section.

These are absolutely silent and super energy efficient when not overdriven.

While very quiet and reliable they are nowhere near as strong as an abyzz Pump of equivalent rating.

I was running a vario-s feeding my manifold with small amount going into the tank and it just couldnt handle it.

They are great if you have a straight path into the tank or the flow completely bogs down with any amount of Ts and 90s in the equation. Replaced that with an A100 and its night and day and I'm only pushing the A100 @ 45 percent with waaaay more flow.
