Reusing the aquarium wastewater?

I need to know how often the filters need changing for one thing . There is the step up that does water changes for 10 lol. I also am hesitant about ATOs as I have read about the valves sticking and causing floods . Never happened in any of my toilets maybe a salt creep thing .
 
I've been dumping saltwater water down the drain for many years on septic. I never understood the concern. Only the solid waste is stored in the septic tank and all liquid goes out to a leech bed or my case two 2600 square foot sand filters and ends up in a creek and eventually lake Erie. I just had my septic cleaned last year for the first time in 29 years and the only thing wrong was the heavy crust on top because I waited so long and it made the job a pita for the guy pumping it.

I think I have a super strain lol. 29 years without cleaning is pretty unusual. I wasn't even having any issues I just figured it was time 🤣
 
I have read about people using waste water to start new systems I believe it sounds feasible and I am going to start a 3 gallon tank with waste water,dry sand and a small dry rock bommie I made using small pieces of man made fake live rock. I believe using the water may give the system a jump start when cycling. This photo is a photo of the tank with no water or sand.

Oh I wondered what that was . Why would I donate that to someone ? So I will get you to explain sooner or later. So what is a Sulphur Reactor physically look like ? Picture if you will take the time for a lowly newbie 😁

Its a Ctech TS-2 Cacuim reactor i converted to sulfur by puttin that john guest plug in the CO2 line

That 1/2 white hose isnt part of it i had to remove my carbon reactor to get a picture of the sulfur
I run all my reactors off my return line . Its easier to manage them via 1 pump vs 4-5

I run a very large freshwater aquarium in parallel with the smaller reef tank. All saltwater from changes goes into the freshwater tank (scarcely budges the conductivity overall, and I’m growing some “impossible” freshwater plants now). Of course, this only works because of the volume discrepancy.
 
I’m wondering if you could use rejected RO water to dilute saline from change-water over time….(two birds theory).

Do you live in a mosquito infested place like I do? Might could set saltwater traps to inhibit successful breeding of blood flies….

There is a product that uses a dialysis membrane to filter aquarium water, just like a kidney. It has been around for decades and is called DialySeas

Interesting - and perhaps one of the most unrealistic silly inventions ever. To do 'dialysis' one needs to have a constant flow of water into, and out of the dialysis membrane - the intake water contains what you want the tank to be, the output contains the water with the waste. In this case - you could basically do the same thing as an automatic water change system - i.e. drain bad water out, add good water in, They also use a regular RO/DI system for the input water. For the thousands of dollars of initial cost - followed by the hundreds - thousands of yearly costs , depending on tank size it's no wonder they are 'unknown' despite 25 years in business. It's an expensive water change system IMHO. Maybe for some systems it's worth it - for the general hobbyist - IMHO, No.

The question is - not how much does it cost. The question is does it work as well - or hopefully better than a method already available for less money/effort. My opinion - is yes there is something already available for less money and effort. However, I don't completely understand where the 'dialysis fluid' is coming from and how much of that 'solution' is required per hour. Depending on those numbers it could be an option for someone who wants to drive a Lamborghini.

I am not going to argue one way or the other. I did 15 years or so ago and honestly don't have the energy to do it again. I am sure the thread is findable on RC, it was lengthy and ugly. They system is not for me, I was just pointing it out in context to the "kidney" reference, as that is what the membrane acts as.

Point taken . I am wondering how much work or maintenance or supplying what it needs there is so time and money just to run it. Plus after all the great claims they say you should use ICP tests . That in itself changes things

It costs $3500 US Plus you have to buy consumable parts for it as well like you said

I found out after I lost all my cichlids to Malawi bloat the they like brackish water from Lake Malawi
