About 2 weeks ago I had an RFA die, I got it out pretty quickly and it didn't disintegrate very much. I've been doing 25% water changes every 4 days, runnings activated carbon and just started nopox.

Just had levels tested at the LFS Sunday results were:

NO3 = 26 ppm
PO4 = .79 ppm
Calcium = 400
Alk = 9.8
Mag = 1290
Salinity = 1.026

As it stood nothing was showing visible stress or decline until the other day this RFA uprooted and started acting funny. Today it's in this condition (see photo) completely inside out.

Everything else in the tank doesn't seem bothered at all other than 1 BTA that's been finicky since it split.

I'm wondering if it's too late for this RFA and If theres anything I may be overlooking that could turn the tide for the better.

Any insight would be much appreciated.

How old is the tank?
How old is the patient in question?
Was it damaged when it was moved to your home?

- Tank is 15 months old.
- Patient is unknown age but has been in this tank for 6 months.
- To my knowledge it wasn't damaged, got 3 at a large reef festival and of them this particular RFA seemed to be the most happy of the bunch.

What fish or inverts in the tank, did you add anything recently? RFA's are super tough, something must have changed recently for that to happen

Update: All 3 RFA's perished. The last one was doing fine and all of a sudden declined and in nursing it back to health a chunk went missing. I'm pretty sure the emerald crab was sticking his claw into the mouth of the RFA and pulling out the innards as a snack. Nothing else has shown any signs of aggravation but I will rehome the emerald crad at the slightest hint of it.

I'm actually about to get some RFAs so I appreciate you for making this post. It's sad that they all perish because I heard RFAs are somewhat hardy creatures.

Did you ever get new ones? By the way, the emrald crabs are always up for some type of destruction. I had one that started to eat my GSP so that was the last of it. I think they do more harm than good.
