So I'm in the market for a new RO membrane. I have a BRS 75gpd dual DI system. I didn't realize membranes with sorted by their GPD rating. What else would I have to change out to bring it up to a 100 gpd system? Just the membrane and a flow restrictor? If so, are these flow restrictors fairly universal? What do i have to look out for when shopping for one? Is this upgrade even worth it? Thanks!

You have a few options:
  • If you have soft water, or softened water you could add a second membrane plumbed in series.
  • If you don't have soft water, you could plumb a second membrane in parallel
  • You could add pressure with a booster pump to make your existing membrane produce more
  • You could change to a higher capacity membrane (and flow restrictor)
There are two common types of flow restrictors - capillary flow restrictors and barrel type flow restrictors (which sometimes contain a capillary flow restrictor). We prefer the capillary flow restrictors. They are inexpensive, easy to change out, and easy to tell apart because they are color coded. It's not bad practice to keep 2 or 3 restrictors with different capacities on hand and swap them out if your water temperature changes through the year.

Awesome thanks! I'll probably start with a booster pump and stick with my 75gpd membrane. If that boosts me towards actually getting 70ish gallons a day I'll be much happier. And if there's need arises later, I'll plumb in a second membrane!
