Thinking about adjusting my scape to allow for one rock formation towards the center of my tank to come above the water-line by a couple of inches.....

See what grows upwards and how far perhaps..... anyone have rocks that come out of their water?

I saw this in a tank at a LFS before. Seemed fine but if you have suicidal CUC, they may see it as an invitation to enter our atmosphere.

It also would never be the same color as the rock below the waterline, especially when coralline algae and such get going, that alone would deter me from having rocks above the waterline since it would look like a sore thumb.

It can be done. If done right, why not? I don’t see any harm to the tank.

I Have a very small tip of rock that sticks out the top of my tank perhaps 3/4 of an inch. The section (just like on a beach) that occasionally gets wet - continues to have various things growing on it. The piece that never gets wet is white. if you can arrange it such that it is wet at various points of the day (wave maker, pump, etc) - it will continue to collect 'stuff'.

My first thought was you could have a small pump and create some sort of waterfall feature. I see mdbannister did that which is cool sounding. Personally I'll always use a canopy due to jumpers and the amount of dog hair always floating around my house.

First thing came to my mind to. Small mj or other pump in the tank behind the rock and run a small hose up the back. Only thing may be water noise

Yours is about my thoughts for my 93g cube. Make the rock like a volcano coming out of the water, with a water trough around it, like a round river with a waterfall going down into the tank.

We love hermit crabs, so he could come down from the volcano onto the reef rock and under the water. We'll also have a variety of plants to make it like a jungle.
It will be something like a Clownfish harem tank.
