RODI system stagnation

RODI unit has had water unit for 2 months unused.

New system, work got crazy, I jumped the gun. Tank sitting empty water in RODI unit.

Looks like recommendations are to replace everything due to potential bacterial and bio film growth.

I have ordered the filters, resin etc.

Plan on scrubbing and rinsing the canisters. Do you think the lines would be ok?

Remove all filters, pour a tablespoon of bleach in the first prefilter canister and close up the system like normal. Turn on the water until the water comes out the product and waste lines. Turn off the water and let sit for a few minutes. Then turn on the water to flush the system for 30 minutes. Ensure the canisters do not smell of bleach. If they do you can rinse them out and flush again until you dont smell anymore bleach. They also make a packaged product to clean a standard size RO system called sani system.

Thanks. I’m currently running it now to just flush what was in there with everything still in it. 5 tds after membrane and 0 after resin. Do you think that if the were any fouling of the the system it would be much higher?

Membrane should be fine, as for the line change them if you would feel more at peace with it. You can use ice maker 1/4” lines that you could pick up locally at any one of the large hardware stores.

I wouldnt be worried myself using it for my aquarium without sanitizing. Ive serviced commercial RO units used in food service that havent been sanitized for much longer. Also lets not even mention fast food ice machines....

Unless you know it was contaminated somehow or you're running non-potable water through it, I'd think it would still be fine for service after sitting for 2 months. Let it run just flushing the membrane for and hour or so if you can, but otherwise....

Ive had mine sit for longer than that before. Didnt even think about it to be honest.

The water on the pre-ro membrance side will have some trace chlorine and other chemicals your city uses to keep it clean. The post membrane will be free from 99% of bacteria as the membrane removes bacteria and other contaminates.

I only run mine about once a month. I fill up a big tank then it sits. I’ve been doing this for years.

MY RO canister is about 3 years old and I have a 7 gallon bucket hanging near the ceiling that the ro/di feeds, then the water flows by gravity to my tank.

The entire system is DIY.

That bucket and all the lines are coated with slimy bacteria. This has been running for about 40 years like that. No issues yet. I don't think that bacteria inside ro units do anything harmful, but I am not a doctor or researcher.

I do know that everything in my tank, the sea or a lake is also covered in bacteria.
