Hey all,

Wanted to get your expertise on my new Royal Gramma. Its showing a white blotch around the gill plate and bottom jaw, but only on one side. Otherwise, everything looks good and it is eating. I'm still getting familiar with what to look for, so I'd appreciate your thought on whether this is something to be concern about and if the current QT plan will suffice.

It’s a wild-caught specimen I brought home three days ago. I’m following the SRQT quarantine method, started with a PraziPro bath, and it’s now in a CopperPower and MetroPlex treatment going on day three. One thing I observed: yesterday (day two), after dosing two scoops of MetroPlex, the tank developed some translucent white slime and became slightly cloudy. The QT setup is pretty bare with: an airstone, heater, PVC elbow, and the fish. After dosing, the RG became a bit lethargic, but by this morning it was active again and eating frozen brine shrimp. Another thing to note, on the first day I only dose one scoop of the MetroPlex.

Do not mix these two together and if scratching may be due to flukes which they are prone to
Is fish breathing normal or elevated?

Thanks for your response. Fish has normal breathing.

Don't mix copperpower and metroplex?? I was under the impression the use of them together is alright and effective for ICK and Brook.

With this being a new fish, and the lesion only being on one side, I suspect that it is some minor capture injury.

Copper Power and Metroplex don't react together, but they overlap in what they treat, and both can cause some stress. The idea is that since each causes some stress, using them together essentially increases that.

Thanks! I suspect the full dose of two scoop of metroplex last night caused the RG to be stressed and lethargic. Will just continue with the QT as planned.

Welp, I’m back with a little more concern as we’re two days away from finishing up the 15-day SRQT. The last two nights, the RG has been acting up. It’s been swimming along the outer perimeter at the bottom of the tank. When it does stop, it starts to float on its side before swimming again.

I noticed this behavior last night, but this morning it wasn’t acting the same way. It took to frozen brine this morning and again this afternoon. Trying to get some feedback from the community on whether this is just stress-related behavior or if it could be something else.

Never thought having a fish tank would be this stressful. Even with setting up my QT tank and equipment, it’s been a lot. I’m seriously considering buying livestock only from a reputable retailer that quarantines their fish beforehand.

The gramma seems pretty stressed out. Does the tank have good hiding places? Sections of 1" PVC pipe would work well. Are you feeding anything other than brine shrimp? That is not very nutritious.

What treatments are in the water now?
Are you monitoring the ammonia? If so, what is the reading?

Hey Jay,

Yes, there is a PVC tee in there right now for shelter. I’m not feeding anything else at the moment. I tried flakes, but he didn’t take to them. I’ll pick up some mysis later today and give that a try.

Currently, the tank has Copper Power, and I dosed MetroPlex 36 hours ago. I’m about to dose it one more time. Ammonia should be low since I did a 100% water change on the 10-gallon two days ago. The Serious Reef quarantine protocol calls for 100% water changes every three days to help keep ammonia under control.

One thing to note is the copper level is a bit high at 2.6 ppm, but this is the same batch of water I started the quarantine with. I initially made 50 gallons of saltwater and dosed it with Copper Power.

Just tested ammonia and the API test didn’t registered any. RG is back to normal this morning not showing the same type of behavior shown in the video.

If you try mysids - you may need to use a razor or a sharp knife to cut them into smaller pieces.

Thanks for the heads up. I take it you don’t see any underlying diseases?

There's something wrong, but I don't see a clear idea as to what that might be....

As Jay indicated your Gramma is stressed. Don't worry about Pellets or Flakes. Grammas seem to like Frozen, but you should be adding Mysis as Brine is low on Nutrition. I have one and they really need Rockwork to feel secure, and he needs to have small holes and crevice's to hide in. Large PVC won't do it. They can fit themselves in holes that are unbelievably small. Like a 1/4". You could try some small lengths of 1/2" or 3/4" PVC. Also, mine won't eat Pellets or Flakes and has probably a half dozen favorite hiding spots in my DT and when they feel secure will actually be out in the open more.
