RTN Chalice?

How's it going? Possibly better then me. I believe one chalice I got last night, now has RTN. I got it Yesterday, and it looked fine. Even at night it looked better then fine, it looked Great. Then this morning, it was thin, and you could see the skeleton. This is the first time this has happened. The coral was in this other tank for at least 6 months before I got it. I don't se too many talks about LPS RTN, but I believe this is it. Please let me know what you think, and what you think I should do. Thank you. Take care

Are your parameters ok? Anything close enough to sting it?

Everything is fine. I just put it in the tank and there is nothing around to sting it. The closet thing at the time was a rock of zoas. When I woke up yesterday morning, I saw the changes and moved it to the back corner shelf, where corals that need to adapt to high lighting. I put the coral in after lights were out, and moved it before the MH came on. Last night I did a quick 10gal water change and will continue to do 10gal a day. But I may pull back on that, as I don't want to stress it any more. Thanks for reading.

acclimation? (was there any, and how)
sunburn? (how close to the lights was it initially placed?)
where did it come from? (LFS recent shipment- neglected / healthy system)

It was Floating in the bag. It was not a new shipment. It had been in the LFS for at least 6 months. Reason I got it was he reduced the price, bc a TINY and I mean tiny part of the rim got touched by a mushroom, and he figured that he had to finally drop the price and move it. It only receded at the tip of it, and was not bad. No sunburn, b/c only act's were on, then leds. And in the morning, only the act's came on, and I saw the changes. The dip.... The dip was... No no dip. I usually don't. With softies yes. But not LPS. Today, it actually looks a lil better. More of the eyes look thicker and not at thin. But I am in no way out. It sucks bc it has beautiful colors, and ridges, and great piece. Thanks for all your help and input. Take care

When I dip LPS I dip them quick in lugals and rinse with tank water before putting back in the tank...also this is a must IMHO for LPS...put some SG on the flesh all around where the necrosis is!

Try feeding it some mysis shrimp this evening. depending on the size of the colony, use a plastic 2 liter bottle and cut it in half. cover and squirt mysis in the top hole. should trigger a feeding response.

I use coral revive by TLF... I use it for about 3 mins. Would lougal's be better? I havent exactly had the best results with my acclimations. Can someone describe their acclimation procedure please? Legnth/dip/etc...?

Dr Terro,

I have found that when this happens the chalice needs to be shaded and fed as often as it will eat. Make sure its not a ton of food at any one sitting cuz they will just throw it up. Average feeding on a daily basis will help alot.

I do not know if it bothers them, I just don't. If I see flat worms in the tank, I may use a ph & temp balanced fresh water dip but that's it. I will try to get it to want to feed, but I don't think it will happen. I believe, and I am no expert, and I didn't even think this out; I believe it is stressed due to maybe it was missing something in the other tank where it was and it got use to not having it. Whatever it may be. ?!? An idea. The only other thing that I can possibly, possibly think of is that there might have been a small ph swing from when I put it in at 5:30pm, till 7:45am that's all I can really think of. I do not want to dip it, for I believe that will only continue to stress it out. Thank you all again.

Lugals is just something I've always used...and btw I don't dilute the iodine at all...with any dipping actually...But in terms of acclimation I dip quickly then drip in large container for probably close to 1/2hr or full hour depending on size of colony...if its a small frag IMO a quick concentrated dip followed by a good tank water rinse does the trick!

I had one chalice that started to loose some tissue .... I believe it was due rapid fluctuation in kh levels, but one that was corrected it stopped!!

It's very important that you post your exact parameters in these types of situations. Saying that they're "fine" isn't going to help solve anything because chalices are hardy, but they are only hardy if very strict parameters are met :)

You never acclimate corals? you just drop them in your tank?

Im confused... what do you dip them in before you drip acclimate?

OK. Parameters.... Temp= 74.5 - 76 sal=1.025 Nitrate= 0 Nitrite= 0 PH= 8.2-8.23 Am= 0 Mag= 1300 +/- Did not have time to do the cal/alk this morning. But I honestly don't believe them to be the problem. But when I get home I will check. I believe it might have been either a temp swing, or ph swing. Or the possibility that the place holding it was lacking something, or had different parameters and I shocked it. Holding from yesterday. As good yesterday as today. No new continued tissue loss. Thanks again. I will post more pictures tonight.
