Rust on black box

hello , wasn’t sure where to post this but someone locally is selling a black box , It says it has rust. Should i buy it ?

If you're handy at DIY, for 20 bucks as long as all the LEDs work, which in the picture it appears they do, you could get the fixture, take it apart, sand it down and repaint it.

If t is just on the outside, sure. I’d grind it off and repaint it though. Don’t want any to drop into your tank.

With that kind of moisture it may have got inside. May have been to humid or water splashed in it. I would stay away..
It could rusted or corroded the inside.

After sanding off paint and rust, use a rust converter which will turn the metal and leftover rust black and inert then paint.

This is the exact reason I am saving all my pennies for good lights. My lights are going to cost me 5 times more than what I just paid for my tank on Craigslist haha.

I had a BB that rusted pretty good (worse than OP pic) still worked fine and ended up giving it to a friend that opened it up refinished it and is still running a year later.

PAINT AND CLEAN UP AND EVEN TAPE THE WIRES WITH ELECTRICAL TAPE FOR PROTECTION FROM CORROSION.

Not suggesting you need them, but this is the very reason I use Glass covers

Completely agree. There is a reason they are so cheap and there are many claims out there that they have caught on fire. Not sure how that isn’t helpful? Could potentially be saving someone’s home from burning down.

Hopefully everyone is using a GFCI outlet nowadays. They even have AFCI outlets that specifically prevent fires, where as the GFCI prevents shocks.

... I have too agree with this ... it was a fair and valid point ..fire risk is always possible !!!
