So I will be painting this stand, and will replace the hinges while I am at it. I was looking for stainless, but I used the blum soft close when I did the kitchen and still have extra, plus I love the idea of the doors never accidentally slam when let go.

Anyone ever coat something like hinges with petroleum jelly to prevent rust?

While i've never used it personally, i've heard that this stuff works great. rated for use in marine saltwater equipment. I've read about it being used on vehicles in the south that live near the ocean, and cars from the north that get salt on the roads.

Would probaly work but it might also thin out with heat(from lights) and run(drip). Or you accidently touch it and get into tank..
Why not just paint them before installing?

Interesting... living in the rust belt of central ny we use woolwax on a lot of stuff. I'm curious about this.

Coat the surface of the hinges with food safe silicone grease for a few dollars. Will keep them looking brand new and it’s safe around aquariums since that’s what you use to coat O’rings.

Btw, Red Sea includes a tube of food grade silicone grease with their stands for just this reason.

That's a good idea and I think I have tube's of it.

What about food grade silicone spray? It is what my meat grinder recommended 🤷‍♀️

Works great on squeaky doors and hinges too.. or foldable baby strollers…

Silicone grease.. and then also - replacing hinges every few years is not going to cost a fortune (a few US&A bucks)..

I work in joinery, and had the option to use Stainless Steel Hinges instead of the pressed metal style on my own aquarium

Ended up just running with the normal metal ones for 2 reasons.
- Coat them with silicone grease and they wont rust
- The stainless steel ones were 10 times the price! I could literally change the hinge every year for the next 10 years and would still come out on top!

The wife has some corroded hinges on her tank. Sounds like Chewbacca has stubbed his toe when closing/opening. I'm a magnet, door on, door off kind of chap.

I mean, I got a killer deal on a 4 year old setup so I am running with it. But it's a plywood stand, with 2 doors on the front and a sump door on the side.

As many others have said... If you coat the hinges in silicone grease they will last alot longer. I would use the spray stuff as it will get into the gaps of the hinge but be extremely carefull as to not get any overspray around your filter equipment. I would go as far to say try and remove the hinges to spray them away from the filter.
