Has anyone successfully converted a saltwater aquarium setup to a freshwater like a discus tank with the sump and all?
Can I still use a sump?

Also what's the best forum out there for freshwater/discus fish?

Thx

I use an internal overflow box with just a wet/dry section in my sump for discus. It works great. I chose it because I wanted to get good oxygenation at the high temperatures they need. I also supplement it with two AquaClear 110's. There are 20 large Discus in a 4 ft 120-gallon tank. I think the best discus forum is Simply Discus although I almost never go there anymore.

Do discuss fish need QT? Can I get them cheaper than stores locally via hobbyists?

It is generally recommended by experienced Discus keepers to isolate new fish in an observation tank. Not really a QT protocol like saltwater. Diseases are less common than saltwater and I typically just add new fish to my display and have not had an issue that keeping high temperatures will not solve (sometimes as much as 92-93 F). If you can find local breeders you may be able to save some money. I bought all of mine online. The supply and quality are generally better that way. I think they are largely produced by large Asian breeders and imported, although I think some US online shops breed some of their own fish.

What I have learned about keeping Discus is (1) Maintain high temperatures. I like 84-86 F. (2) Change water frequently. I do about 70% per week, but many keepers recommend 50% daily. (3) Tank must be clean. I prefer bare bottom for cleaning with some hardy plants in pots for easy siphoning out of feces. (4) Need to keep at least about 8-10 fish to avoid aggression issues. (5) They come from soft acidic water. My water is naturally that way and I would try to duplicate it if possible.
