Sand Shifting Sea Star strange behavior?

For the past week, my 2 Sand Shifting Sea Stars have been riding 'piggyback' on each other. It's always the same one on top (one is darker than the other so it's easy to tell them apart).

They never bury totally under the gravel since they've been like this.

I actually separated them one time to be sure one wasn't eating the other and it didn't look like it was trying to eat the other. Put them on opposite ends of the tank. By the end of the day, the darker one was on top of the lighter one.

Is it possible they could be trying to reproduce ?

In the wild a male star will grab on and ride with the female until she's ready to spawn its an insurance that he doesn't miss out when she's ready.lol

Yup, and that's what you're seeing here. And I believe it's a seasonal, 1 time a year event.
