Sand sifting starfish

I have two sand sifting starfish. Is this a mating pare or are they trying to kill each other?

I would pull the top one off and check the bottom. Starfish extrude the stomach over their pray to digest them.

I have done that a couple of times. And they seem to be fine from what I can see. And they always end up back just like that. With that one on top, not the other way around.
