I am looking to start my first coral reef tank. I have had many fresh water tanks in the past but I decided to take the plunge into reefing.
I found a deal on a 65 gal Aqueon ensemble that I couldn’t pass up. After purchasing, I was looking at reviews online and there seems to be a high rate for aquarium leeks for this model that happen later on down the road, around the 60 day+ mark. I have had it full of water for 3 days now, no leaks so far. My question is, would I be able to add seal around the aquarium bottom. Is reinforcing the existing seal an option? If so, any recommended brand or type for this job? I want to do things right. Returning tank is not option at this point. Any help wound be greatly appreciated!

new silicone will not chemically bond to the old silicone so just adding more to the bottom may not do the trick. If it was me, and I had to re-seal the tank, I would cut out the silicone on all inside surfaces (just not between the panes) and then apply a good bead on all joints.

Unfortunately new silicon will not adhere to already dried silicon.

You have two options

1) Inspect all the seams and assess the likelihood of a leak (is there any cracks, any air in the seams, do the seams look old, ect)
2) Pull all the glass panels apart, clean completely and re-silicon

Agree, adding silicone will pretty much do nothing.

I'm not familiar w/ this tank failing like you mentioned, do you have a link on that?

I'm impressed with the good customer service responses in that link though, seems like they really stand behind their product. I wouldn't worry about it, chances are very low you would have a bad tank anyway.

Yeah agree, at least there is response, and we don't know all details, shipping issues, stands, user error, these are all potential factors.

Usually we see issues posted on forums and a pattern of some kind, I have not noticed anything.

It would be interesting to see how many tanks were sold and how many had issues due to construction. Most people do not review stuff unless they have a problem.

I appreciate all the thoughts and advice. The reviews had me stressed, every thing seems fine for now. I’m going to hope for the best and purchase a smaller tank and have it on stand by incase it does spring a leak. Thanks for all the help.

I keep brute trash cans on hand, not only are they great for WC's, but they also make great holding vessels if moving or emergencies.

I have the same model you linked. I had it filled for 2 years on the stand it came on, then wanted to upgrade to a sump underneath and built my own stand. I can say to date the only leaks I have had were from my own errror... like leaving my airline tubing attached and making a puddle in my room. I honestly even feel my tank is un-leveled and still have not had a problem with it... knock on wood.

Relax... I don't think you have anything to worry about. I've been using these tanks for 10 years... all shapes and sizes. Never had a leak. I like them!
