Second New DIY Two Part Recipe with Higher pH Boost

It’s very good for pH. It’s like double the pH boost of soda ash. It has the same pH boost as kalkwasser per unit of alk added.

We prefer this recipe over the 1st version.
Which of the three recipes I pointed to are you actually using? How long have you used it? What new results have you noticed since you started using it?

283g Sodium hydroxide/1 gal

500g Calcium Chloride/1 gal

183g Balling Part C/1 gal

I get impressive pH boosts. It supplies alk, calcium, and magnesium. It maintains other major and minor elements, too; Fluoride, potassium, boron, sulfate, among many others.

Thanks!

I added Balling Part C recently but find I also need to dose the magnesium part from the first post to keep my Mg stabile.

I am also adding TM trace elements to the Alk and Cal parts.

Did I read elsewhere that Epsom and mag chloride also had to be added at 1/3 the dosage when using Balling C?

You shouldn’t dose the 3rd part in this thread if you are using balling part c

Here’s a quote from Randy:

Balling Part C should not just be added on top of that. One needs to scale back my third part to only correct for consumption, and that is done by using 1/3 of the normal amount of my part three, and in a perfect world, using a different recipe for that third part (the 10:1 recipe chloride to sulfate).

Yes, you are correct.

Confusing, isn’t it?

That’s why I made this thread. It outlines exactly what to do, including that extra 1/3 magnesium part.

This is as perfect as you can get. It accounts for magnesium consumption: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/diy-three-part-with-balling-part-c-recipe.1063575/

I'm glad I asked. So Balling Part C adds magnesium, but only 2/3 of the amount than the "normal" Mg sulfate/Epsom mix. It also adds trace elements.

It doesn’t really add trace elements. I mean, it technically does, but it’s only there to prevent it from getting pushed down too low from the dilution step.

All 2 parts will raise salinity. So when you bring it back down, it will lower everything else except for sodium and chloride. Balling Part C prevents that.

This all is based on Recipe Number 1 from the Reef Chemistry Calculator?

That is expected if you want to maintain what is in your salt mix.

Ok. It says trace elements in the ad.

Right, but it does not offset any consumption. It just offsets the drop that would come from the salinity readjustment.

Very. I was about to continue using Randy's original recipe #1, but then saw his threads in which he detailed other new recipes using sodium hydroxide, sodium sulfate and even Balling part C. I don't know if he was actually recommending people switch to them, or just spitballing new recipes that could reduce unwanted buildup of NaCl, etc. Even with those new options, what happens if the pH vs alk levels aren't balanced, and I need to start supplementing with sodium carbonate or bicarbonate?
