Hi Randy.
Could you help me with this calculation.
I’m trying to make a selenium a 1 liter solution that will have a concentration that will increase selenium by 2 ugl when dose at 1ml per 100L.
My source of selenium is 200 mcg capsules of L-selenomethionine.

This is a copy and paste from the diy archive for others reading this:

Selenomethionine (mw = 196 g/mole) is 40.3% selenium by weight.

1 g Selenomethionine /L is 40.3 mg Se/L = ppm.

If you dose 1 mL of that to 100 liters of aquarium volume, the boost is 0.0040 mg/L or 4.0 ppb Se.

Can you clarify if that means 200 ug of selenium or 200 ug of selenethionine. I
Assume the former, but lets clarify first.

Ok, so each capsule contains 200 ug of selenium.

If you want to raise 100 L by 2 ug/L, you need 200 ug of selenium. Thus, exactly one capsule will do it, but I doubt you can dissolve it readily in one mL because of the other stuff in the capsule and the capsule
Itself.

If that does not work then could use the same mixture you provided above with this capsules. Mixing 1 gram of the power in these capsules per 1L of water

As I indicated, you are unlikely to be able to accomplish that with those capsules. You’d need to dissolve a thousand in that liter.

No. There is more stuff than selenomethionine in those capsules.

Ok so if 200 ug/l is 0.2 ug/ml
And lets say I want a .02 ug/l daily dose

I could mix 8 capsules in 1 liter of water and dose 9.5 ml per day to maintain .02ug/l in a 379 liter tank ?

375 x 0.02 =7.58

7.58 / .8=9.475

There are liquid solutions:

But if you dissolve 1 of your capsules in any amount of water and add it to 100 L, that will give the original needed boost.
I don’t need it for 100l I was just trying to make a 1 liter solution that could relate to most of the avaliable reef bottled trace element solutions for reef tanks. Most are mixed with a dosing criteria of 1 ml will increase the aquarium value to .2 ugl per 100l. I did find powder form this place. What you think about this.

So if I mix 1 gram of the powder above in 1 liter of water it will only boost selenium by
0.002013 mg/l in 100 liters right ?
