there was a "gentlemans agreement" that anyone who got a frag from the original owner would not sell any frags until feb.'08.

Not trying to start anythhing here but I have always wondered why it would be that only 1 original frag / colony of a certain coral would have ever been harvested from the ocean. For example the Tyree Watermelon. Is it possible that this person got the only frag / colony that the ocean ever had in it? Seems to me if there was one colony there had to be more of the same.

who was the original owner?

the original owner(s) are WhoDah? and one of his friends (can't remember his name....John maybe?)

nope, never seen a pic of the mother colony.......but here is my piece which is pretty big.

*supposedly* people have been offering them upwards of several hundred buckaroos just for a small frag. supposedly will be hotter than the watermelon (although thats obviously arguable)

for a WHILE the tyree watermelon was the only one available. its only been recently (in the past year or two) when lots more have popped up. it usually takes whole salers and dive companies a while to figure out what the hot corals are, and try to go harvest more of those colors in the ocean.

same goes for the superman and sunset monti's. when they first hit the scene, they were very scarice. once word got out of a year there was money to be made off of those colors......wilds starting coming out of the cracks.

its only a matter of time.

in fact, there is a similar mummy eye already in circulation....but its called the "emerald mummy eye".......its colors are slightly different and doesn't have the rich lime green.

Thanks that makes sense. Like any other trade / business where the money is people will go and make it. Now when can you frag me a piece of that? :) It really is a nice piece. How has the growth been? I have the supposed original Watermelon and it has grown very slowly.

yeah, i have the original watermelon too, its SUPER slow growth......and honestly i've seen better looking watermelon morphs out there now.

the mummy eye grows pretty fast, its already encrusted onto the rock i put it on and i've only had it for about 2 months. but i think i have it in too much light...its a little pale. not quite as electric green as it once was.

why would anyone agree not sell a frag if they bought it originally as a $100+ frag? I would like to get my money back from the 1inch frag that burned a hole in my wallet, right? IMO

Thats just me :D...looks like a sweet peice too. If anyone wants to trade for some RASTA's (7 polyp frag :) ) LMK!!!

Too bad the colors in that picture have been all jacked up (I'm kind of particular about that). I like your picture better Al, much more natural looking.

Also just to add.... When a "farmer" like Tyree come out with a new Coral they pretty much are the only one. People like to buy "the truth" ... They will pay that ridiculous amount just to say they have it even though there are wilds out there that resemble the same coral. It's kinda like buying an Audi even though Volkswagon make the same car... It's just the name and one is made in Germany and the other in Mexico.

Sorry to tell you but thats how a micro shot of the coral looks. The picture was taken by Eric (Ebn). You should see the kind of camera equipment he has. Its not your run of the mill stuff. I have personally own or seen almost all the most wanted Tyree, etc... chalices. The mummy eye is a very impressive piece. Another piece that is amazing is the frag farmers Miami Hurricane. There has been a few different variations of the pink watermelon coming in recently, but nothing really compares to the Tyree piece. Same as the red version.

just b/c someone has very nice/expensive camera equipment...doesn't mean they know how to use it. no offense, but the saturation levels look like they are pegged out, or the white balance hasn't been adjusted.

plus, those shots were taken with a Nikon...hehe

FWIW....this is the best chalice i've ever seen in person (including the original mummy eye, original tyree watermelon, original red watermelon colony etc....)....this chalice has no famous name.
