"Sexy Rev's" Diet Thread

Good info, I have not thought of Marv! Can you explain the loop thing to me in a little more detail?

As far as timeline and target would go I know I want to loose 50lbs and be at 200lbs. I think thats ok for a 6'1 guy right? Also I would like to be down to it by August for sure. I think I can do it faster, but I want to learn to eat instead of just crashing and then gaining it back.

Rev, actually I missed the first step, the most important step.. knowing WHY you are willing to change whatever it is you want to change... this is the most important thing because circumstances and different things will test your commitment.. so you always have to know WHY first and keep reminding yourself about this..

Plan
- write down your goals and when you want to accomplish them...

Do
- follow your plan and keep track of your progress and setbacks...

Check
- check your progress either weekly, monthly, or whatever works for you..

Adjust
- if your plan is not working, look at your WHY, get fired up or ticked off, then go back to plan... if your original plan is working, keep following it.. obviously, you're doing something right..

hope this helps Rev... way easier in theory though... I've struggled thru different things following this plan but it always work if you follow it.. you'll have your victories and struggles but in the end, you hope that it'll be for the best... man, I can talk about this all day long.. :)

Luckily for me, I guess, is that I grew up on the pink can with a list of chemicals a mile long...you all remember TAB ! :) Ugg. But, after drinkig that I can down most any diet drink and not have a problem.

Look for diet drinks with Splenda as the sweetener....made from sugar but without the calories....I love the stuff.

Also, Crystal Light is a good sub for plain water...though with all our RO systems, good quality water is sooo close.

I get into trouble when I find myself in the drive thru lane...the drive thru is a killer...avoid at all costs.

Oatmeal seems to be good in the morning for me, tunafish sandwich or some other decent sandwich at lunch time....oh wait...instead of this...how about....Write down a list of every food you think you have ever eaten and enjoyed. Should take you a good 30 min. - hour to recall life's wonderful dishes. Then, put a heart next to ones you think are good for you, and an X by ones you think are bad. Then check them out on some of the dietary online sources and you should be able to come up with a good list of a variety of healthy foods. Sometimes just cutting down servings is all that is needed depending on your metabloism.

Here's a challenge Rev :) See those mountains behind you in that pic? I'm sure you and I would darn near die trying to hike them today....but, we can plan on hiking them in 2008 after a year of getting healty :)

Best of luck!

Well here is my plan thus far. I have decided to eliminate sodas from my diet and drink water. :( This is something that I will have to get used to. I would love to train myself to drink diet soda, but I have tried before and the stuff is just plain NASTY! Any tips on that?

Also I am cutting back my snacking, and wherever we choose to eat I am going to try and make a more healthy choice.

My wife started the Weight Watchers Diet a few months back and she has not broken it one time. To date she has lost 30lbs. Daddy Likey! :) The point counting works for her, but I think it would be hard for me.

I want to loose weight for these reasons.

#1 To have a healthy body pleasing to God. (doing my part)
#2 To be around longer for my wife, daughter, and family.
#3 To be taken more serious by others. Being a Pastor people take you more serious when you are fit. Believe it or not.
#4 To be sexy. Ok not really, but Bryan got me started! LOL!

Rev, You state the # 1 reason is to have a health body pleasing to god. I want you to know your body has nothing to do with pleasing God. I think that your implying that god dislikes heavy, or overweight, or Morbid obesity. This has nothing to do with god and everything for yourself. I have a Disease called Morbid obesity and have had it for over 25 years. My Health issues were concerns that were really stacked against me. Well after 5 months of testing and years of documented medical supervised dieting I was approved for Bariatric surgery. I had surgery just over 3 weeks ago and can tell you it is a God sent prayer for me and I have since lost 42 lbs and am starting to feel better. You may be not happy with your weight but God Loves all even the Morbid obese...

Hey Pazazz I should have clarified a little better and looking back at that, I can see what you mean. Here is my explination for point number 1.

1 Corinthians 6:12-20 NIV

19 Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.

I am in no way implying that God does not love someone because of the way they look. I know that God loves everyone all the same. I know he loves me the same as he does you, and he loves you the same as he does Bryan, but we must do our part in order to live a healthy lifestyle. In your case you were born with a disorder and thanks to progressive medicine and God you can now start getting into better shape/health.

According to God's word, God loves even the worst sinner just as much as the best Christian. Although he loves the sinner, he hates the sin. Also according to God's word, gluttony is a sin. Being big doesnt mean you eat to the point of gluttony, only you know what limit that is for yourself. For me being big is a sin because I don't have health problems.

I never said God didnt love obese people, I said I wanted to please him with my body.

Romans 12:1
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

There are plenty of ways that I can not please God with my body and weight is one for me. I am not passing judgement on anyone, I am merely speaking for myself. If you get something out of what I say, then thats good too.

I can't expect God to give me a full long life if I am not taking care of my body.

I am sorry if you were offended, but I in no way was implying that God wouldnt love someone. On the contrary you can go to the ends of the earth and God's love will still be there for you. :)

Ok it's time to take up an offering....LOL!

I was not offened Rev... I was just implying that god loves all, including those that struggle with weight or smoking or even drugs. I am blessed with a new healther lifestyle because of medical technology and will be able to win my fight over obesity. I wish you the best and know how hard it really can be. Some of us can try to loose weight and at some point you system stops know matter what you do (no I am not refering to a plato, A condition of insulan resistance that makes weight loss 5 times more difficult than an average person). I was running 12 hours a week on the treadmill and my body would still not burn anymore fat, while mantaining only 1500 cal a day.

You can do it Rev we will Cheer you on !!! and Bryan too!!! :)

Seriously you dont know how much I really understand where you are coming from. Like I said, I know God loves everyone equally. Many of you may know Saul in the bible who was renamed Paul. He was one of the biggest sinners, who persecuted, hunted down, and locked up Christians. Here is what he wrote in 1 Timothy and I quote.

12 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry; 13 Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. 14 And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. 15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. 16 Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting. 17 Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

According to Paul himself, he was the biggest of sinners, yet God called him, forgave him, and now Paul is considered to be one of the greatest evangelist that ever walked the face of the earth.

Well the advice I received from my Cardiologist(which I have not taken yet)write down all the foods that you really like ,then don't eat any of them.haha
If it really tastes good to you ,you will probably eat tooo much of it.
Ron
I have tried several things but am convinced "cutting back and more activity"is the answer for most people.

hey rev joe here i hope youre diet goes well it is hard but stick with it and just remember if u fall off of it for one day just get right back up on it
i was severly over weight 2 years ago i weighed 350 pounds and one day i woke up and said thats enoufgh it took me 2 years to finally get to my goal weight of 210 pounds but i finally did it. what i did was
1 i cut back on my sugar in stead of drinking soda i drank water or some crystal lite ice tea many flavors and they reallly dont taste like those diet sodas
2 i dedicated 20 minutes of exercise of walking 4 times a week just walking around my street with my dog or my freind so i did not get bored as soon as i did this i started to loose some pounds
3 after that i started to cut back a little on red meat and eat more chicken than red meat if u like pork eat that as well it has less fat than beef i cut out some of the starchie stuff to like mashed potatoes and corn went with spinach and broccli peas then increased my walking to 35 minutes 4 times a day and for a while i lost weight but after a while i stoped loosing weight but started to loose inches the most important thing is dont starve youre self because if u do you will loose muscel instead of fat and thats not good.
i hope everything goes well if u ever need anything please pm me as i know loosing weight is hard to do but sticking to the diet is much harder

Rev:

Reading through this I kept thinking... "How could I help my dear friend out?" I came up with a few ideas.

1) You could cut me a frag a day and walk it over to my house.
2) You could walk to my house and I'll give some aiptasia.
3) I could just take that Nano off your hands so you aren't so tempted to walk into the kitchen.

Just trying to add some humor, but on a serious note even though I'm not to big of a guy I did loose about 10 pounds when we got tucker... Take your dog out for a daily walk they will love you for it.

Brandon

P.S. Tucker loves you too.

I love you Brandon....... NOT!!!

Hey Rev. I was just reading the "Quit Smoking" thread and found that you did end up starting a thread as well for your weight loss as well. First off, congrats on the initiative and doing it for all the right reasons. As you know, it will definitely pay off in the end although I can tell you from experience that it is definitely a tough row to hoe and if you do it right, it will become a new lifestyle.

Although I am still only in my young 20s, I set myself a goal about 4 years ago when I was in college that I needed to get rid of the "baby fat" :) that I had been toting around into my late teens. Among just reading and reading about nutrition and different ways of approaching losing weight, it really boiled down to me figuring out what I could cut out of my diet and what I could live without. Like you and others have said, I decided at first just to completely cut my snacking at night. I found out that one thing that I could do and told myself was that I wouldn't eat ANYTHING after 8 or 8:30. Sometimes this was tempting because I would just say, "heck, it's only 7:30" :) but I quickly learned that that wouldn't get me anywhere. I also decided to cut out red meats for about a year and switched to chicken, fish, pork chops, and only other lean meats as well. One of the other things that I became really interested in along the way has been cooking. I have found a lot of joy in cooking the food and get a lot more enjoyment out of finding new healthy meals that I can cook for me and my gf that are not only healthy but taste great. I can send you some great places to look if you're interested.

It has now been 6 years since my decision to lose weight and I have been in "maintenance" mode now for about 2 years. The best way that I found out to lose the weight over the long haul is to not cut out the things that you like completely. I read something in muscle and fitness magazine and it really stuck with me. Make sure to treat yourself every once in a while. This doesn't mean to have a whole half gallon of ice cream, but what I try to do is have something "bad" once a week or once in a while. After you do it for a while, you'll have an idea of how much you should be eating in a given day. If I eat something not so healthy in the afternoon, I'll limit myself in the evening, etc.

Sorry for the rambling...I commend you for setting yourself an incredible and fullfilling goal. There is nothing quite like the satisfaction of knowing that you're doing something that will benefit not only you but those around you as well.

Keep us updated on how things are going.

Go Rev Go!

I'd be happy to offer any help with nutritional questions that you might have!! I won't even charge... LOL J/K

Try replacing the soda not with diet drinks but with flavored water, then back to something you like that is healthy totally. Soda in general will taste nasty to you after a month or two of this... And I agree that sugar is worse than fat at first. Just be careful to not replace too many carbs in the diet with fat lest you risk ketoacidosis and your cardiovascular health. Try to keep eating complex carbs and fiber...

Go Rev Go!!!

RevTree!

Oh how awesome, you mean I can track fellow folks trying to shed some pounds without going to any of the dorky weight loss forums?!? ExcellenT!!!

I'm working on the same, mainly for health and to model good habits for the kiddos. Ditching the sodas is a huge change, how ya doing with that? Even though I'm totally diet soda, I find I drop weight instantly just from switching to water and teas. Thats a HARD switch. I have diet coke running through my veins. And the caffine headaches are awful.

Great job!

Well thank you all for your support!

Update:

I quit my diet and stayed the same weight wise. My wife had started weight watchers and it was really working well for her. Soooo I made a pack with her that I would start the same diet when she hit a certain mark. Well I started earlier. I have been on the doet for 10 days and I have lost 9lbs. :)

My wife has lost 50lbs!!!!

This is by far the easiet and best diet she has ever been on and also for myself.

Thanks again for your support!

I just want to say keep up the good work, and add a little insight of my own:

Without reading the whole thread to see if anybody has said this yet;
You may want to check out "The Abs Diet" by Men's Health.

It sounds like a "Diet" - like atkins, south beach, etc but it is really not. The whole idea behind it is to feed your body what it needs.

The idea is based around 12 power foods, including lean meat (turkey), nuts, beans, and eggs just to name a few. If you eat these foods your body will burn fat, so the idea is to eat as much of these 12 in every "meal" (supposed to eat 6 times a day) as possible.

The basic principals of the "diet" are on the Men's Health website. To get the more in depth theory on why these 12 foods you must buy the book.

Anyhow, I found the book to be very interesting and scientifically solid. It goes through why certain foods are good and why others are really bad. The only reason why I reccomend this is because it scientifically teaches you how to live healthy for the long term, not just cut weight now. It tries very hard to avoid sending people on the yo-yo ride of loosing weight then gaining it back.

Anyhow, I hope I have said something useful and not just rambled.

I battled my weight at one time... I was a 5'7" tall high school sophomore who weighed close to 200lbs. I did not really follow any particular diet, but I got motivated (decided I liked hot women, go figure), quit eating snacks all together, and rode my bike for 4 miles every day for 6 months.

Now I am happy to report that I have weighed between 160 and 170 ever since. Recently I began following the Abs Diet principals to hopefully reveal my abs, though this not by far the best or only reason to do the program, and started some weight training to bulk up a bit.

You can do it!

Congrats on getting back on the horse Rev and the 9 pounds that you have lost already. That is awesome about the weight your wife has lost as well. It doesn't really seem like a life-changing type of thing before you start losing weight but it really gives you a new outlook (well at least it did for me).

Keep up the good work and don't give up!!!! :)

Adam

Thank you!!

UPDATE: As of this morning I have been on weight watchers diet for 3 weeks 5 days I think. I have lost 17lbs. :)

My clothes are getting very loose on me now. Thanks for your support.
